1. Engineering of the Ultra-stable Cystine Knot Framework of Microproteins : Design, Chemical Synthesis and Structural Studies
Sammanfattning : Ultra-stable cystine knotted microproteins, in which two disulfides and their connecting backbones form a circle that is penetrated by the third disulfide bonds, have attracted high interest due to their resistance to degradation in vitro and potential for the development of peptide drugs. This thesis gives new insights into engineering of that framework of microproteins, including approaches to their chemical synthesis, backbone engineering, structural and biological evaluations. 2. Synthesis, conformational analysis, and biological evaluation of peptides from E. coli P pilus proteins
Sammanfattning : Many bacteria utilize hairlike protein appendages (pili) to attach themselves to mucosal cell surfaces in the host organism. The pilus is assembled from protein subunits synthesized inside the bacteria and transported to the outer cell wall for incorporation into the growing pilus. LÄS MER
3. Structure and function of relaxins
Sammanfattning : The relaxin/insulin superfamily is a group of peptide hormones that consists of ten members in human, namely relaxins 1-3, insulin-like peptides (INSL) 3-6, insulin and insulin-like growth factors (IGF) I-II. These peptides have various functions in the body, such as regulating growth, blood glucose levels, collagen metabolism, germ cell maturation and appetite. LÄS MER
4. LL-37-derived cyclic antimicrobial drug leads : Design, synthesis, activity and different ways of creating them
Sammanfattning : In an era where last-line antibiotics are failing, one of the powerful approaches to develop novel therapeutic agents is to turn back to nature in order to identify possible drug candidates. Among the potential candidates, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have garnered much attention as an antimicrobial. LÄS MER
5. Antigens derived from the mucin MUC1 : Solution and solid-phase synthesis of saccharides, peptides and glycopeptides
Sammanfattning : Mucin is a term used to describe a large family of heavily glycosylated proteins which are present on the surfaces of secretory epithelial cells and are overexpressed by many carcinomas. Membrane-bound mucin MUC1 is of special interest. Its backbone consists of repeating units of twenty amino acids with five potential glycosylation sites. LÄS MER
