  1. 1. Early perturbations in lipid metabolism in insulin resistance

    Författare :Else Hellebö Johanson; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Nyckelord :insulin resistance; nateglinide; peak VO2; postprandial; relatives; triglyceride-rich lipoproteins; visceral fat; VLDL;

    Sammanfattning : Subjects with the Metabolic Syndrome with or without type 2 diabetes are at excess risk for developing cardiovascular disease. The mechanisms are still not completely understood. Resistance to insulin-stimulated glucose uptake is associated with several metabolic and hemostatic risk factors for cardiovascular disease. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Physical Fitness and Pregnancy

    Författare :Eva Thorell; Per Kristiansson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Physical fitness; oxygen uptake; pregnancy; back pain; blood pressure; duration of gestation; relaxin; cycle ergometer test; physical exercise; perceived health;

    Sammanfattning : Objectives To assess physical fitness in pregnancy and to evaluate its effect on perceived health, back pain, blood pressure and duration of gestation. Also, to evaluate the effect of serum relaxin levels on blood pressure and duration of gestation. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Physical Training and Testing in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

    Författare :Ragnheiður Harpa Arnardóttir; Gunnar Boman; Kjell Larsson; Margareta Emtner; Hans Hedenström; Sven Larsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Physical therapy; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; pulmonary rehabilitation; physical training; endurance training; interval training; health-related quality of life; exercise testing; walking tests; physiotherapy; Sjukgymnastik;

    Sammanfattning : The overall aims of the studies were to investigate the effects of different training modalities on exercise capacity and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with moderate or severe COPD and, further, to explore two of the physical tests used in pulmonary rehabilitation.In study I, the 12-minute walking distance (12MWD) did not increase on retesting in patients with exercise-induced hypoxemia (EIH) whereas 12MWD increased significantly on retesting in the non-EIH patients. 4. 4. Physical activity, body composition, inflammation and effects on antioxidative capacity in sedentary adults

    Författare :Petra Lundström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP;

    Sammanfattning : Background: For the past fifty years part the population has slowly become sedentary to an extent that it is nowadays considered normal behavior. Parallel with sedentary behavior there is an increase in obesity now reaching epidemic level. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Physical exercise and electrical stimulation in the management of metabolic, cardiovascular and skeletal-muscle alterations in people with tetraplegia

    Författare :Nils Hjeltnes; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; Spinal cord injury; glucose metabolism; electrical stimulation; exercise; skeletal muscle; body composition; catecholamines; blood pressure.;

    Sammanfattning : Interruption of the spinal cord at the cervical level leads to permanent extensive motor paralysis, serious autonomic regulation deficits and profound short term and long term metabolic disorders The defects play a decisive role for the tetraplegic individuals future function and health. The aims of the present thesis were ( I ) to assess the physical endurance capacity and the trainability of recently spinal cord injured patients, with a special emphasis on tetraplegic persons, (2) to investigate the autonomic regulatory defects during arm ergometry in chronic tetraplegic individuals, (3) to study skeletal muscle metabolic and morphologic consequences of long standing tetraplegia, and (4) to investigate the effects of electrically stimulated leg cycle training (ESLC training) on oxygen uptake, body composition, skeletal muscle glucose metabolism, and skeletal muscle morphology.
