17. Disease, Death, and Displacement : The long-term effects of early-life conditions on income, education, and health in Sweden, 1937-2011
Sammanfattning : How are people’s lives shaped by what they experience during infancy, childhood, and adolescence? How are their adult lives impacted by a sudden improvement or worsening in their early-life conditions?This dissertation aims at providing some insights about how specific changes in early-life conditions can affect individuals’ lives in the long-term. It focuses on three very different shocks to early-life conditions: (1) exposure to disease and vaccination, studied through the case of polio and the vaccine against it, (2) experiencing forced migration, studied through the case of Yugoslavian refugees in Sweden, and (3) losing a parent during the childhood years. 19. “Only Leave Them to Themselves” : Frances Brooke’s Fictional Worlds of Emancipatory Sensibility
Sammanfattning : In conversation but frequently at odds with contemporary voices on education, British eighteenth-century writer Frances Brooke (1724-1789) argued for a thoroughly revised approach to moral education that relied on the emancipatory potential of inborn sensibility. This thesis considers Brooke’s original texts, which range from periodical writing, novels, tragedies, operas, and prefaces, in the light of education, sensibility, and form, with the intention of expanding our understanding of Brooke’s contribution to eighteenth-century proto-feminist debates. 20. Educational and Occupational Careers in a Swedish Cohort
Sammanfattning : This thesis includes four empirical studies investigating factors related to educational and occupational careers in a Swedish cohort born in 1953. Data from the longitudinal “Stockholm Birth Cohort study” (SBC) are used. In Studies I & II I investigate educational careers among children whose parents were interviewed as part of the SBC study.
