    Sammanfattning : The general aims of this dissertation are to analyse how family situation, and especially lone parenting, influence health and life chances in Sweden and the extent to which possible relations are influenced by socioeconomic circumstances and health selection. In two population-based cohort studies we analysed overall and cause-specific mortality (1991-95), and also severe morbidity (1991-94) from different causes among lone mothers in comparison with mothers with partners.     Sammanfattning : The aim of this study is to explore the development of how people in different generations of a family with a hereditary hearing loss developed knowledge and to examine the role of the educational system and how it influenced this development.The research questions are:What is the prevalence of the deafness spoken of in the family chronicle?What different kinds of knowledge did the family members with deafness/hearing loss develop and how did they make use of them?In what ways may they have experienced their deafness/hearing loss as a suffering?What knowledge did they develop because the hearing loss recurred in several successive generations?The studied material includes answers from a questionnaire, different historical documents and sixteen interviews. In four empirical studies based on Swedish population registers, two topics are examined in this thesis: The relationships between different indicators of social position and mortality, and the importance of family members’ socioeconomic resources for the survival of the individual.
