  1. 11. Plasmodium falciparum drug transporter genes in emerging malaria multidrug resistance

    Författare :Maria Isabel Mendes Veiga; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Malaria is caused by an intracellular protozoan parasite of the genus Plasmodium. The use of chemotherapy, the foremost tool available for the control of the disease, has been challenged in the last decades by the development and spread of drug resistance among malaria parasites. 2. 12. Managing childhood malaria in rural Tanzania : focusing on drug use and resistance

    Författare :Jaran Eriksen; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Malaria; Policy change; Sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine; Chloroquine; Tanzania; Health workers; Drug resistance;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Malaria is a leading cause of death in underfive children in Africa. Due to the spread of chloroquine (CQ) resistance, sub-Saharan African countries such as Tanzania have changed their malaria treatment policies. In 2001 Tanzania replaced CQ with sulfadoxine/pyrimethamine (SP) as first line malaria treatment. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Modelling and Simulation to Improve Antimalarial Therapy

    Författare :Jesmin Permala Lohy Das; Mats Karlsson; Martin Bergstrand; Joel Tarning; Mads Krielgaard; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; pharmacometrics; pharmacokinetics; pharmacodynamics; malaria; artemisinin; weekly dosing; resistant; pregnant populations; intermittent preventive therapy; parasite clearance; day 3 positivity; nomogram; Pharmacokinetics and Drug Therapy; Farmakokinetik och läkemedelsterapi; Pharmacokinetics and Drug Therapy; Farmakokinetik och läkemedelsterapi;

    Sammanfattning : The introduction of artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) substantially reduced malaria-related mortality and morbidity during the past decade. Despite the widespread use of ACT, there is still a considerable knowledge gap with regards to safety, efficacy and pharmacokinetic properties of these drugs, particularly in vulnerable populations like children and pregnant women. 4. 14. Organometallic complexes with antimalarial properties

    Författare :Lotta Glans; Kemisk fysik; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bioorganometallic chemistry; Chloroquine; Antimalarial; Drug resistance; Organometallic; Arene;

    Sammanfattning : Malaria is a serious disease that causes around 800 000 deaths per year. Current malaria control efforts are hampered by the widespread resistance to common antimalarial drugs, such as the 4-aminoquinoline derivative called chloroquine. LÄS MER

  5. 15. The molecular basis of Plasmodium falciparum resistance to the antimalarial lumefantrine

    Författare :Christin Sisowath; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Malaria control is compromised by the development and spread of Plasmodium falciparum resistance to antimalarial drugs, which has caused an increase in malaria related morbidity and mortality. Artemisinin based combination therapy (ACT) has been implemented in almost all malaria endemic areas in an attempt to suppress drug resistance. LÄS MER
