  1. 1. Non-parametric methods for functional data

    Författare :Johan Strandberg; Sara Sjöstedt de Luna; Konrad Abramowicz; Lina Schelin; Charlotte Häger; Pedro Delicado; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; functional data analysis; testing; clustering; prediction; inference; bagging Voronoi strategy; kriging; dependency; matematisk statistik; Mathematical Statistics;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis we develop and study non-parametric methods within three major areas of functional data analysis: testing, clustering and prediction. The thesis consists of an introduction to the field, a presentation and discussion of the three areas, and six papers. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Valid causal inference in high-dimensional and complex settings

    Författare :Niloofar Moosavi; Xavier de Luna; Jenny Häggström; Edward Kennedy; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Causal inference; high dimension; sensitivity analysis; variable selection; convolutional neural network; semiparametric efficiency bound; Statistics; statistik;

    Sammanfattning : The objective of this thesis is to consider some challenges that arise when conducting causal inference based on observational data. High dimensionality can occur when it is necessary to adjust for many covariates, and flexible models must be used to meet convergence assumptions. The latter may require the use of a novel machine learning estimator. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Selection of smoothing parameters with application in causal inference

    Författare :Jenny Häggström; Xavier de Luna; Marie Wiberg; Yanyuan Ma; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Smoothing parameter selection; Nonparametric regression; Semiparametric additive model; Double smoothing; Causal inference; BMI; Divorce; Statistics; Statistik; Statistics; statistik;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis is a contribution to the research area concerned with selection of smoothing parameters in the framework of nonparametric and semiparametric regression. Selection of smoothing parameters is one of the most important issues in this framework and the choice can heavily influence subsequent results. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Bayesian Modeling of Directional Data with Acoustic and Other Applications

    Författare :Jalil Taghia; Arne Leijon; W. Bastiaan Kleijn; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; Directional statistics; directional distributions; axial distributions; von Mises-Fisher distribution; complex Watson distribution; complex Bingham distribution; Bayesian inference; probabilistic modeling; variational inference; two-dimensional hidden Markov models; Markov chain; blind source separation; frequency domain BSS; underdetermined BSS; online BSS; Bayesian recursive; gene expression data; gene-microarray data; line spectral frequency; speaker identification. ii;

    Sammanfattning : A direction is defined here as a multi-dimensional unit vector. Such unitvectors form directional data. Closely related to directional data are axialdata for which each direction is equivalent to the opposite direction.Directional data and axial data arise in various fields of science. LÄS MER

  5. 5. On predictions, measurement, and causal inference : Essays on statistical correlations and statistical applications in labor market economics and criminology

    Författare :Petra Ornstein; Johan Lyhagen; Per Johansson; Kenneth Carling; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; risk marker studies; correlation measures; identification; field experiments; observational studies; Statistics; Statistik;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis consists of five papers covering a broad range of statistical themes, from prediction via correlation measures to causal inference.Paper I uses a nationally representative survey of separated Swedish women to examine whether men who strive to control their partners during their relationships are more likely to stalk or assault their ex-partners after separation.
