1. Genetics of pain : studies of migraine and pain insensitivity
Sammanfattning : Pain is a major public health issue throughout the world. Increased understanding of the different forms of pain and identification of susceptibility genes could contribute to improved treatments. LÄS MER
2. Norrbottnian congenital insensitivity to pain
Sammanfattning : Congenital insensitivity to pain is a rare hereditary neuropathy. We present patients from a large family in Norrbotten, Sweden with a mutation in the nerve growth factor β gene (NGFß). Using a model of recessive inheritance, we identified an 8.3-Mb region on chromosome 1p11. LÄS MER
3. The use of monogenic disease to study basal and disease associated mechanisms with focus on NGF dependent pain insensitivity and ISCU myopathy
Sammanfattning : Monogenic diseases make excellent models for the study of gene functions and basal cellular mechanisms in humans. The aim of this thesis was to elucidate how genetic mutations affect the basal cellular mechanisms in the monogenic diseases Nerve growth factor (NGF) dependent pain insensitivity and Iron-Sulphur cluster assembly protein U (ISCU) myopathy. 4. Distribution and function of TRP ion channels in primary sensory neurons
Sammanfattning : It is frequently argued that cannabinoids exert part of their analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects via activation of the cannabinoid CB1 receptor located on TRPV1-expressing primary sensory nerve fibres in peripheral tissues. However, we find no evidence of CB1 receptor immunoreactivity on nerve fibres in rat or mouse hindpaw skin and mesenteric artery. LÄS MER
5. Central pain after spinal cord injury : experimental studies with special emphasis on pharmacological treatment
Sammanfattning : Injuries and dysfunctions of the central nervous system can cause central pain which, according to clinical experience, is often refractory to conventional treatments. The present thesis consists of experimental studies on the mechanisms and treatments of central pain using a well-established animal model of central pain after spinal cord injury. LÄS MER
