21. Cell death in atherosclerosis
Sammanfattning : Rupture of atherosclerotic lesions is recognized as the major cause of acute cerebrovascular and coronary syndromes. The characteristics of the typical vulnerable plaque include increased inflammatory cells at the shoulder region, a large lipid core, a thin fibrous cap with few collagen fibers and smooth muscle cells. 22. T cells in atherogenesis
Sammanfattning : The work of this thesis aims to answer the following questions: (1) Which role do CD4+ cells play in atherosclerosis? (2) Is the expression of CD4 essential for the athero-protective effect mediated by immunization with oxidized LDL by adjuvant? (3) How does the antigenspecific T cell response to oxidized LDL influence lesion development? (4) Is there a general shift to Th2 responses in severe hypercholesterolemia? and finally (5) Which role does transforming growth factor-B (TGF-B)-signaling in T cells play in atherogenesis? ApoE-/-CD4-/- mice were used to study the effect of CD4 deficiency in atherosclerosis. The development of atherosclerosis was decreased with attenuated inflammation in apoE-/- mice lacking CD4+ cells compared to immunocompetent apoE-/-. LÄS MER
23. Protective Immunity in Atherosclerosis
Sammanfattning : The immune system is a promising target for novel therapies that are aiming at reducing cardiovascular diseases. Autoimmune responses against modified low density lipoprotein (LDL) are believed to promote development of atherosclerosis. Proinflammatory immune responses can be counterbalanced by immunosuppressive regulatory T cells (Tregs). LÄS MER
24. Alpha-1-microglobulin, heme-binding protein, reductase and antioxidant
Sammanfattning : This thesis describes structural and functional studies of alpha-1-microglobulin (a1m), a 26 kDa plasma and tissue protein that is evolutionarily well-conserved and belongs to the lipocalin superfamily. The lipocalins are polypeptides of 160-190-amino acids that are folded into an 8-stranded beta-barrel forming a pocket with a hydrophobic interior. LÄS MER
25. What is the function of B cells in experimental atherosclerosis?
Sammanfattning : Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. A major cause is atherosclerosis, which is a chronic inflammatory disease of medium and large size arteries characterized by the accumulation of cholesterol rich low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particles in the sub-endothelium layer of the vessel.
