21. Astrocytic communication and cell death during metabolic depression and oxidative stress
Sammanfattning : Stroke is a major cause of death and adult disability in the western world. Most often, stroke is caused by the occlusion of a brain artery. Within the perfusion territory of the occluded vessel, various degrees of necrotic and delayed programmed cell death will occur if the occlusion persists, leading to expanding tissue damage. LÄS MER
22. Oxidative stress-related factors in abdominal aortic aneurysm: potential clinical implications
Sammanfattning : Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a mostly silent vascular disease, with a rupture-related mortality rate exceeding 80%. To aid in future diagnosis and prognosis efforts, the studies included in the present thesis have explored the role of specific oxidative stress-related factors in the context of AAA using two population-based cohorts: AAA screening cohort of 65-year-old males (n = 421) and the Malmö diet and cancer study (MDCS) (n = 25252). 23. Biomarkers of oxidative stress and their application for assessment of individual radiosensitivity
Sammanfattning : Radiotherapy is one of the most common therapeutic methods for treatment of many types of cancer. Despite many decades of development and experience there is much to improve, both in efficacy of treatment and to decrease the incidences of adverse healthy tissue reactions. LÄS MER
24. Oxidative stress and inflammation as a response to glucose exposure and dialysis
Sammanfattning : Abstract: The main player of this thesis is glucose, both on a cellular level and with a clinical approach. Too much or wrongly handled glucose contributes to increased inflammation and oxidative stress, which is reinforced by the negative influences of uraemia and dialysis treatment. LÄS MER
25. Measurement and Evaluation of Antioxidant Status and Relation to Oxidative Stress in Humans
Sammanfattning : Numerous diseases are associated with reduced antioxidant defence and oxidative stress. The antioxidant defence includes dietary and endogenous antioxidants and involves complex interactions between them. LÄS MER
