  1. 11. Exhaled markers of oxidative stress in the airways

    Författare :Mona Lärstad; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :exhaled air; exhaled breath condensate; malondialdehyde; 3-nitrotyrosine; ethane; pentane; isoprene; oxidative stress; airways; inflammation;

    Sammanfattning : Breath contains a number of different molecules, some of which may have potential use as markers for oxidative stress in the airways during chronic airway inflammation. The major objectives were to develop and validate methods for quantifying five potential exhaled markers of oxidative stress: malondialdehyde (MDA) and free 3-nitrotyrosine (3-NT) in exhaled breath condensate (EBC) and ethane, pentane and isoprene in exhaled air, and to test the applicability of the methods. 2. 12. Biotic and abiotic stress in microorganisms and plants: Some Mechanisms of Stress and Programmed Cell Death. Genetic Engineering Approaches Towards Improved Stress Tolerance

    Författare :Per-Johan Meijer; Tillämpad biokemi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biotic stress; plants; microorganisms; stress tolerance; antifreeze protein; proline; programmed cell death; systemic aquired resistance; Biochemistry; metabolism; Biokemi; Bioteknik; Biotechnology; abiotic stress;

    Sammanfattning : Various forms of stress, such as biotic and abiotic stress, were studied in microorganisms and plants to learn more about the underlying mechanisms of such stress and potential genetic engineering strategies towards stress tolerance. An antifreeze protein from winter flounder, expressed in E. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Oxidative stress and alterations in the mammalian iron metabolism : A study on iron, inflammation, oxidative stress and neurodegeneration

    Författare :Jonas Hälldin; Tiit Land; Paolo Arosio; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurochemistry; Neurokemi; Neurochemistry and Molecular Neurobiology; neurokemi med molekylär neurobiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Iron is essential for all living organisms, from bacteria to man for a broad variety of biological functions, including oxygen transport and DNA synthesis. However, iron can also be toxic, due to its involvement in the formation of highly reactive oxygen species through Fenton chemistry. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Insulin-Producing Cells, Iron, Oxidative Stress, and Lysosomal Pathology

    Författare :Beata Teresa Olejnicka; Enrique Cadenas; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Insulin-producing cells; redox-active iron; oxidative stress; lysosomes; desfenioxamine; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Sammanfattning : Accumulating evidence suggests that injnries caused by oxygen-derived radicals contribute to the destruction of pancreatic islet ß-cells in autoinnnune diabetes mellitus (diabetes type I, or IDDM). Oxidative stress may be caused by an enhanced production of oxygen-derived radicals, or by a decreased scavenging of such molecules. LÄS MER

  5. 15. Determination of biomarkers for lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress : Development of analytical techniques and methods

    Författare :Kristina Claeson Bohnstedt; Bo Karlberg; Niels Heegaard; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; capillary electrophoresis; mass spectrometry; electrospray; porous graphitic carbon; oxidative stress; lipid peroxidation; biomarker; malondialdehyde; hydroxynonenal; isoprostane; Analytical chemistry; Analytisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : Oxidative stress can be defined as a state of disturbance in the pro-oxidant/antioxidant balance in favour of the former, leading to potential damage. Processes associated with oxidative stress involve reactive oxygen species and radicals and can result in elevated levels of oxidatively modified or toxic molecules that can cause cellular malfunction, and even cell death.
