1. Industrial applications and properties of oxalate-degrading enzymes
Sammanfattning : Oxalate-degrading enzymes were investigated with focus on potential applications in the pulp and paper industry and in active packaging. Changes introduced to make the pulp and paper industry more environmentally friendly, such as recirculation of process-water streams and elementary chlorine free bleaching of pulp, have led to increasing problems with precipitation of calcium oxalate. 2. Organic acids in root exudates and soil solutions. Importance to calcicole and calcifuge behaviour of plants
Sammanfattning : Many vascular plant species are unable to colonise calcareous sites, the floristic composition of adjacent limestone and acid silicate soils differing markedly. The inability of these 'calcifuge' species to establish themselves and grow on limestone soil appears to mainly be related to their low capacity for solubilising and absorbing phosphate and/or iron from such soils. 3. Impact of root and mycorrhizal exudation on soil carbon fluxes : influence of elevated CO2 and metals
Sammanfattning : The thesis concerns the behavior of root and ectomycorrhizal (ECM) exudates. In particular, the dynamics of soluble low molecular weight (LMW) organic compounds such as organic acids (LMWOAs), amino acids, monosaccharides, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) have been studied. 4. Removal of Metal Ions from Wood Chips during Acidic Leaching
Sammanfattning : Wood chips are the main source of intake of non-process elements at kraft pulp mills. It would be advantageous to decrease the content of these elements in the chips prior to pulping. LÄS MER
5. Inorganic ions in wood chips- Leaching prior to Kraft pulping and effect of calcium on Kraft delignification
Sammanfattning : Wood is the main source of Non-Process Elements (NPEs), such as, calcium, potassium, manganese and chloride in Kraft pulp mills. Due to the recirculation of cooking chemicals and water, process disturbances related to the accumulation of NPEs in the process streams are inevitable. LÄS MER
