1. Prevalence and Inheritance of Hip Osteoarthritis in Iceland
Sammanfattning : Hereditary factors are suggested to contribute to osteoarthritis (OA), but their relative importance is uncertain. Moreover, the underlying specific variations at the genome level remain unknown. The prevalence of hip OA in Iceland was assessed by examining colon radiographs and was found to be at least 5-fold higher compared to Sweden and Denmark. LÄS MER
2. Skeletal growth and effects of physical activity during adolescence
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to evaluate bone mass and bone size in girls and boys from age 12 to 16, with special attention to physical activity. We also wanted to retrospectively evaluate the effect of exercise for the years preceding age 12. The findings were as follows. LÄS MER
3. BMP implants in bone formation. Studies in rabbits and rats
Sammanfattning : Bone morphogenic proteins, BMPs, are a group endogenous proteins that are highly conserved through evolution. The amino acid sequences of about 15 different BMPs are now known and recombinant human BMPs are commercially available. Implantation of an individual BMP protein is sufficient to induce bone formation even at a subcutaneous site. LÄS MER
4. The influence of alcohol on bone metabolism and fracture healing
Sammanfattning : The influence of alcohol on bone metabolism, fracture and fracture healing was evaluated in men and male rats by measurements of bone mineral density (BMD), biochemical markers and biomechanical testings. Retrospectively, 199 male patients hospitalized for tibia shaft fractures were studied. Forty-nine were judged as problem drinkers. LÄS MER
5. Physical activity and regional bone mass
Sammanfattning : This thesis considers the effect of physical activity on bone mass in weight-loaded and unloaded regions of the skeleton. Bone mass was measured by Dual X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) and by Quantitative Ultrasound (QUS). LÄS MER
