1. A study of finite-size, non-perturbative and anisotropic effects on the Lifshitz-van der Waals forces and torque with material dielectric responses from first-principles calculations
Sammanfattning : The van der Waals and the Casimir-Lifshitz forces are forces of attraction that exist between neutral polarizable bodies due to quantum fluctuations. They can be repulsive depending on the material properties and the geometry of the system. LÄS MER
2. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy and Spin Relaxation in Amphiphilic Liquid Crystals
Sammanfattning : Spin relaxation theory and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy in amphiphilic liquid crystals are presented. Group theory is used to determine the information content and the orientation dependence in spin relaxation experiments, and to investigate the combined effect of crystal and local symmetries and the effect of symmetry on multiple timescales. 3. Thermophysical Modelling and Mechanical Stability of Cometary Nuclei
Sammanfattning : Comets are the most primordial and least evolved bodies in the Solar System. As such, they are unique sources of information regarding the early history of the Solar System. However, little is known about cometary nuclei since they are very difficult to observe due to the obscuring coma. LÄS MER
4. Glypican-1: Structural and functional analysis of the N-glycosylated human protein
Sammanfattning : Glypicans are multifunctional cell surface heparan sulphate proteoglycans co-regulating numerous signalling pathways, and are thereby involved in the control of cellular division, differentiation, and morphogenesis. The heparan sulphate (HS) chains are responsible for many of those biological functions; nevertheless recent studies suggest functional roles for the glypican core proteins in mediating the signalling of various growth factors. 5. Image processing on optimal volume sampling lattices : Thinking outside the box
Sammanfattning : This thesis summarizes a series of studies of how image quality is affected by the choice of sampling pattern in 3D. Our comparison includes the Cartesian cubic (CC) lattice, the body-centered cubic (BCC) lattice, and the face-centered cubic (FCC) lattice. LÄS MER
