21. Towards a Sustainable Food System : Entrepreneurship, Resilience and Agriculture in the Baltic Sea Region
Sammanfattning : This thesis compares conventional agriculture and Ecological Recycling Agriculture (ERA) in terms of their environmental and socio-economic effects. Environmental effects include greenhouse gas emissions and energy use, but this analysis focuses on nutrient losses. LÄS MER
22. Anoxic degradation of organic matter in lakes : implications for carbon cycling and aquatic food webs
Sammanfattning : Considerable evidence from laboratory studies and marine environments suggests that degradation of organic matter (OM) is restricted under anoxic conditions compared to when molecular oxygen (O2) is present. However, other studies contradict this view since they found similar OM degradation rates and bacterial growth rates under both oxic and anoxic conditions in aquatic environments. LÄS MER
23. An Investigation of Mixed Cellulose Esters and Acyclic Polyacetates: Effects of Side-Chain Lengths and Degrees of Ring-Opening
Sammanfattning : Bio-based polymers produced from natural sources are gaining an increased interest as potential replacement for today’s conventional fossil-based plastic polymers. Their use is already wide in many large-scale industrial areas such as healthcare, personal care, and food. LÄS MER
24. Synthesis of sulfur and selenium heterocycles, including derivatives of imidazopyridine and benzimidazole
Sammanfattning : The chemistry developed in this thesis can be divided into two parts. The first part, which is the major part of the thesis, contains syntheses towards analogues to mutagenic heterocyclic amines found in e.g. meat fried at high temperatures. LÄS MER
25. Rapid sample preparation and bioanalytical techniques for efficient screening of organic pollutants in the environment
Sammanfattning : Large numbers of samples often need to be prepared and analysed in surveys of organic pollutants in the environment, but while the methods commonly used in such surveys can provide abundant detail they are generally costly, time-consuming and require large amounts of resources, so there is a need for simpler techniques. The work underlying this thesis assessed the potential utility of more convenient sample preparation and bioanalytical techniques for rapidly screening various environmental matrices that could be useful complements to higher resolution methods.
