1. Levodopa- and Neuroleptic-Induced Dyskinesias : Studies on Pharmacological Modification and Processing of Opioid Neuropeptides
Sammanfattning : Dyskinesias or abnormal involuntary movements are a debilitating complication of long-term levodopa treatment of Parkinson’s disease (PD) that is widely experienced and may compromise the efficacy of the drug therapy. Tardive dyskinesia is another important adverse effect seen with antipsychotic drug treatment. LÄS MER
2. Opioids regulate proliferation of neural progenitors. A study on the effects of opioids on adult rat hippocampal progenitors in vitro and in vivo
Sammanfattning : The opioid receptors were among the first pharmacologically described brain receptors. These opioid receptors have thereafter been shown to mediate effects on proliferation and differentiation in both the embryonal and adult central nervous system. LÄS MER
3. Strategies in the rat gambling task : Individual differences in decision-making and associations to behavior, neurobiology and human strategies
Sammanfattning : Gambling disorder (GD) is a behavioral addiction characterized by persistent and recurrent gambling behavior that disrupts personal, social or professional life. Studies have revealed that GD shares many features with alcohol and substance use disorders, but little is known about potential unique features in GD and to what extent characteristics are shared. 4. The hippocampal opioid system : role in spatial learning
Sammanfattning : The main aim of the present thesis was to study the role of the endogenous hippocampal opioid system, and in particular, the role of dynorphin B and nociceptin, in spatial learning. The effects of bilateral infusion (using chronic cannulae) of dynorphin B into the dorsal hippocampus (CA3-region), an area containing a high number of dynorphin-containing neurons, were examined in the Morris swim-maze, a spatial task dependent on hippocampal functioning. 5. Brain opioid mechanisms in amphetamine induced behaviours
Sammanfattning : Amphetamine abuse and dependence are global health problems, affecting large numbers of individuals. Despite extensive research efforts, there has been no evidence-based pharmacotherapy available for amphetamine dependence. LÄS MER
