1. Strings, boundary fermions and coincident D-branes
Sammanfattning : The appearance in string theory of higher-dimensional objects known as D-branes has been a source of much of the interesting developements in the subject during the past ten years. A very interesting phenomenon occurs when several of these D-branes are made to coincide: The abelian gauge theory living on each brane is enhanced to a non-abelian gauge theory living on the stack of coincident branes. 2. Spin-offs from Stretching a Point : Strings, Branes and Higher Spin
Sammanfattning : String theory has proved to be a valuable theoretical laboratory for probing gravity and gauge theory in a unified framework. In this thesis some of the exciting spin-offs of string theory such as branes and higher spin are studied. After a review of the basics of string theory the four papers of the thesis are discussed. 3. Strings, Conformal Field Theory and Noncommutative Geometry
Sammanfattning : This thesis describes some aspects of noncommutative geometry and conformal field theory. The motivation for the investigations made comes to a large extent from string theory. This theory is today considered to be the most promising way to find a solution to the problem of unifying the four fundamental interactions in one single theory. LÄS MER
4. Exploring effective descriptions of gauge fields and strings : A Lagrangian approach with insights from color-kinematics duality
Sammanfattning : The concept of a color-kinematics duality is an important driving force in advancing the modern understanding of scattering amplitudes, in both field theory and string theory. Yet, open questions remain that motivate the need for a deeper understanding of the duality. LÄS MER
5. Torn, Spun and Chopped : Various Limits of String Theory
Sammanfattning : For the first time in the history of physics we stand in front of a theory that might actually serve as a unification of it all - string theory. It provides a self-consistent framework for gravity and quantum mechanics, which naturally incorporates matter and gauge interactions of the type seen in the standard model. LÄS MER
