21. The ontogeny and function of intestinal dendritic cells
Sammanfattning : The intestinal mucosa presents a huge surface area to the external environment and the intestinal immune system is continually exposed to a wide array of foreign antigens derived from resident intestinal microbiota as well as dietary constituents, including food proteins. In order to maintain intestinal homeostasis, the intestinal immune system relies on the ability to generate tolerogenic responses to innocuous antigen while maintaining the ability to develop effective immune responses to intesinal pathogens. 22. The ontogeny and regulation of human natural killer cells
Sammanfattning : Natural Killer (NK) cells are members of the innate lymphoid cell (ILC) family and take part in the detection and eradication of virus-infected and transformed cells. In this thesis, together with my colleagues I have investigated how NK cells and other ILCs develop and function during human fetal development, how NK cells are functionally regulated (educated) via the activating receptor KIR2DS1, and how NK cells in our body are affected during the early phase of an acute viral infection. 23. From wolf to dog: Behavioural evolution during domestication
Sammanfattning : Biologists since Darwin have recognized that domestication, where species are selected to live in human-controlled environments, exerts strong selection on organisms and dramatically impacts their evolutionary trajectories. Across domesticated mammal species, characteristic morphological, physiological and behavioural changes occur simultaneously, as correlated traits, a phenomenon known as the domestication syndrome. 24. T Cell Ontogeny and Effector Functions in Galphai2-deficient Colitis
Sammanfattning : Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) comprising Crohn s disease and ulcerative colitis is a disease that affects millions of people worldwide, especially in northern countries such as Sweden, and is characterised by chronic uncontrolled inflammation of the intestinal mucosa. It is the general belief that multiple factors such as genetic and environmental aspects are involved in disease pathogenesis. LÄS MER
25. Ontogeny of perception of maternal and nosocomial stimuli in infants
Sammanfattning : Preterm born infants in neonatal units experience unusual sensory inputs that can shape and nurture their developing brains differently from full-term healthy newborn infants. To improve the care of preterm infants and their neurodevelopmental outcomes, we need to understand how the brain functions at different developmental stages and implement this knowledge into clinical care and follow-up programs.
