16. Effects of sex steroids and tamoxifen on VEGF in the breast
Sammanfattning : Sex steroid exposure constitutes a risk factor for breast cancer, but little is known about the effects of sex steroids on factors mediating angiogenesis, the development of new blood vessels, in normal and malignant breast tissue. In this thesis we have investigated the effects of estradiol, progesterone, and the nonsteroidal anti-estrogen tamoxifen on vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptors (VEGFR-1 and VEGFR-2) in normal human breast tissue, endothelial cells, and breast cancer. 17. Genotype-phenotype studies in brain tumors
Sammanfattning : Meningioma and glioma are the most common primary brain tumors, but their etiologies are largely unknown. Although meningioma is usually benign, their intracranial location can lead to lethal consequences, and despite progress in surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy the prognosis for patients with glioma remains poor. 18. Someone has to tell them : exploring hereditary cancer risk disclosure in Sweden
Sammanfattning : Summary in EnglishBackground: An awareness of hereditary susceptibility for breast, ovarian and colorectal cancer in high-risk families enables targeted cancer prevention. A discovered hereditary risk in one family member (proband) may thus be important for several members of that family. LÄS MER
19. Molecular and physiological functions of LRIG proteins and netrin-1 in health and disease
Sammanfattning : The leucine-rich repeats and immunoglobulin-like domains (LRIG) gene family has three members, LRIG1, LRIG2, and LRIG3, that encode three structurally similar transmembrane proteins. LRIG1 is a receptor tyrosine kinase regulator, tumor suppressor, and stem cell marker in the skin, intestine, and brain. LÄS MER
20. The expression and molecular functions of LRIG proteins in cancer and psoriasis
Sammanfattning : The leucine-rich repeats and immunoglobulin-like domains (LRIG) family consists of three integral membrane proteins that are important in human cancer. LRIG1 is a negative regulator of growth factor signaling. Its expression is associated with longer survival in several cancer types, and the gene has been shown to function as a tumor suppressor.
