1. Clinical aspects of olfaction
Sammanfattning : The most important aims of this thesis were: (1) to investigate the prevalence of olfactory dysfunction in an adult Swedish population and to relate dysfunction to factors of possible impact on olfaction, (2) to present our experience with patients seeking medical attention for olfactory disorders, (3) to describe the relationship between detection and identification tests for olfactory disorders, (4) to assess olfactory event-related potentials (OERPs) in patients with olfactory impairment and in healthy controls, thereby exploring possibilities and limitations regarding to the clinical utility of the method, and (5) to evaluate the effect on the sense of smell of radiation in patients treated for head and neck cancer. Materials and methods: In the population-based study, 1900 adult subjects were drawn from the municipal register (I). LÄS MER
2. Novel measure of olfactory bulb function in health and disease
Sammanfattning : Present neuroimaging techniques are capable of recording the neural activity from all over the brain but the olfactory bulb (OB). The OB is the first olfactory processing stage of the central nervous system and the site of insult in several neurological disorders, particularly Parkinson’s disease (PD). LÄS MER
3. Olfaction in Desert Locusts- Anatomy, Function and Plasticity of the Central Olfactory System
Sammanfattning : The anatomy, function and plasticity of the primary olfactory centre, the antennal lobe (AL), of the desert locust Schistocerca gregaria was investigated using a number of neuroanatomical and neurophysiological methods. Anatomical characterisation of the AL in a number of orthopteran species made it possible to deduce a model concerning the evolution of microglomeruli. LÄS MER
4. Olfactory function after total laryngectomy in Swedish patients after rehabilitation with the Nasal Airflow-Inducing Maneuver
Sammanfattning : After a total laryngectomy the upper and lower airways are disconnected resulting in a wide range of adverse effects, e.g. deterioration of nasal functions in breathing, loss or decrease of normal sense of smell and taste, as well as loss of normal voice. LÄS MER
5. Clinical, immunological and olfactory aspects of sinusitis and nasal polyposis : with special reference to patients with cystic fibrosis
Sammanfattning : The otorhinolaryngological approach to the problem concerning rhinosinusitis and nasal polyposis in the recessive genetic disorder of cystic fibrosis (CF) has been developed based on data from international studies. Opinions differ on how to treat the otolaryngological manifestations of CF (sinusitis, nasal polyps and hyposmia). LÄS MER
