  1. 1. On CNS injury and olfactory ensheathing cell engraftment strategies

    Författare :I-Hui Lee; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The intrinsic regenerative capacity of the adult mammalian central nervous system (CNS) is limited because of lack of nerve-growth stimulatory factors and presence of an insurmountable molecular environment for injured axons. This thesis aims to study neural regeneration following adult CNS injury, using rodent models of spinal cord injury, dorsal root avulsion, and Parkinson s disease. LÄS MER

  2. 2. The development and potential of spinal cord stem and progenitor cells

    Författare :Xiaofei Li; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Spinal cord injury (SCI) is an incurable condition, which is mainly due to the highly limited regenerative potential of the adult spinal cord. The discovery of ependymal cells as the source of spinal cord stem cells raises hopes for the development of new therapies, while cell transplantations for SCI also provide promising means for potential treatments. 3. 3. On the influence of glia on neurite outgrowth from dopamine neurons in the nigrostriatal system

    Författare :Malin Saga Johansson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Dopamine; glia; astrocytes; olfactory ensheathing cells; development; ni-grostriatal; mesencephalon; Parkinson s disease; 6-hydroxydopamine;

    Sammanfattning : Interactions between glial cells and neurons are important during fetal development, in the maintenance of the normal functions in tile central nervous system (CNS), arid in response to injuries or diseases. Some of die motor disturbances in Parkinson's disease, a neurodegenerative disorder where one of the hallmarks is degeneration of dopamine (DA) neurons and concomitant depletion of DA in striatum, can be alleviated by intrastriatal grafting of embryonic DA tissue. 4. 4. Trophic factors, neuroprotection and spinal cord repair

    Författare :Johan Widenfalk; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :spinal cord injury; GDNF; GFRalpha; neurotrophin; VEGF; olfactory ensheathing glia; weight-drop injury; in situ hybridization;

    Sammanfattning : Background: There is no cure for paralysis. The only drug therapy presently in use, acute high-dose methylprednisolone, has only modest effects on outcome. There is therefore a great need for new therapies. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Biosynthetic conduits and cell transplantation for neural repair

    Författare :Jonas Pettersson; Lev Novikov; Liudmila Novikova; Mikael Wiberg; Lars Dahlin; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Spinal cord injury; Peripheral nerve injury; Nerve graft; Biosynthetic conduit; Nerve tissue engineering; Neural prosthesis; Neuroscience; Neurovetenskap; neurologi; Neurology; neurokirurgi; Neurosurgery;

    Sammanfattning : Spinal cord injury results in complete failure of the central neurons to regenerate and is associated with cyst formation and enlargement of the trauma zone. In contrast to the spinal cord, axons in the injured peripheral nerve have the capacity to undergo some spontaneous regeneration. LÄS MER
