  1. 11. Chemical signalling in the Drosophila brain : GABA, short neuropeptide F and their receptors

    Författare :Lina E. Enell; Dick Nässel; Jonathan Bacon; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Insect nervous system; Drosophila; GABA; sNPF; GPCR; ion channel receptor; feeding; metabolic stress; olfaction; antennal; lobe; mushroom body; Morphology; Morfologi; funktionell morfologi; Functional Zoomorphology;

    Sammanfattning : Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and short neuropeptide F (sNPF) are widespread signalling molecules in the brain of insects. In order to understand more about the signalling and to some extent start to unravel the functional roles of these two substances, this study has examined the locations of the transmitters and their receptors in the brain of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster using immunocytochemistry in combination with Gal4/UAS technique. 2. 12. Molecular aspects of pheromone evolution in moths

    Författare :David Abraham; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ekologi; 28S genephylogenetic reconstruction pheromone types; ND1 genes; PBP; Pheromone-binding protein genes; Drepanidae; Noctuidae; Geometridae; Lepidoptera; Insect; Evolution; Olfaction; Ecology;

    Sammanfattning : Moths rely on the sense of smell (olfaction) as the main sensory input system in search for potential food sources and in selection of suitable females by males. Specific pheromones are fundamental to the reproductive isolation of species and consequently the olfactory system of moths has evolved to a high level of sensitivity and specificity. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Getting to know Trioza apicalis (Homoptera: Psylloidea) – a Specialist Host-Alternating Insect with a Tiny Olfactory System

    Författare :Lina Kristoffersen; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physiology of invertebrates; Djurs anatomi och morfologi; Entomologi; plant parasitology; Entomology; Ekologi; Ecology; glomeruli; antennal lobe; olfactory receptor neurons electrophysiology; antennae; behaviour; olfaction; Sternorrhyncha; psyllid; Ryggradslösa djurs fysiologi; animal morphology; Animal anatomy; växtparasitologi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis comprises ecological, morphological and physiological studies of the carrot psyllid Trioza apicalis (Homoptera: Psylloidea) with particular focus on olfaction. Data from inventories of winter habitats suggest that T. apicalis prefer Picea abies over Pinus sylvestris and Juniperus communis as winter hosts. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Early Information Processing in the Vertebrate Olfactory System : A Computational Study

    Författare :Malin Sandström; Anders Lansner; Dominique Martinez; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; olfaction; olfactory system; olfactory bulb; synchronisation; CaMKII; mathematical modelling; Computer science; Datavetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : The olfactory system is believed to be the oldest sensory system. It developed to detect and analyse chemical information in the form of odours, and its organisation follows the same principles in almost all living animals - insects as well as mammals. LÄS MER

  5. 15. Auditory and Olfactory Abilities in Blind and Sighted Individuals : More Similarities than Differences

    Författare :Stina Cornell Kärnekull; Maria Larsson; Mats E Nilsson; Johan Willander; Fredrik U Jönsson; Johannes Frasnelli; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; absolute threshold; audition; autobiographical memory; blindness; discrimination; episodic recognition; identification; imagery; judgments of learning; memory; metacognition; olfaction; onset age of blindness; reminiscence bump; sensory compensation; Psychology; psykologi;

    Sammanfattning : Blind individuals face various challenges in everyday life because of the lack of visual input. However, since they need to rely on the non-visual senses for everyday tasks, for instance, when navigating the environment, the question has been raised as to whether perceptual and cognitive abilities in these senses may be enhanced.
