  1. 6. Regulatory mechanisms in olfactory system assembly and function

    Författare :Carolyn Marks; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The mammalian sense of smell relies on the detection of odorants by a large family of G protein coupled receptors, encoded by ~1300 different genes in mice (Buck and Axel, 1991; Zhang et al., 2007). These odorant receptors (ORs) are expressed in olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) in the main olfactory epithelium (MOE). LÄS MER

  2. 7. Chemosensation in Aedes aegypti: from molecular response profiles to host-seeking behaviour

    Författare :Anaïs Tallon; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : The female mosquito Aedes aegypti is the primary urban vector of various highly infectious neglected tropical diseases. Disease transmission relies heavily on odourmediated behaviours, including e.g., sugar- and host-seeking, which are crucial during the mosquito life cycle and has dire impacts on vectorial capacity. 3. 8. Integration and topology of membrane proteins

    Författare :Carolina Boekel; Gunnar von Heijne; IngMarie Nilsson; Stephen High; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; insertion; Sec61; translocation; Biochemistry; Biokemi; biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Sammanfattning : Membrane proteins comprise around 20-30% of most proteomes. They play important roles in most biochemical pathways. All receptors and ion channels are membrane proteins, which make them attractive targets for drug design. Membrane proteins insert and fold co-translationally into the endoplasmic reticular membrane of eukaryotic cells. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Effects of retinoic acid in the mouse olfactory sensory systems

    Författare :Maria Hörnberg; Staffan Bohm; Finn Hallböök; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; olfactory; retinoic acid; neuron survival; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : A common characteristic in neurodegenerative diseases of the brain is death of specific neuronal populations. The lack of neuron proliferation and axon extension in most parts of the central nervous system leads to chronic loss of neurons in the case of injury or disease. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Activity-regulated retinoic acid signaling in olfactory sensory neurons

    Författare :Hande Login; Staffan Bohm; Mattias Alenius; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; mouse olfactory system; RA; neuronal activity; CNG; Cyp26B1; BACE1; Kirrel-2; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of the studies included in the thesis is to better understand the interplay between neuronal activity-dependent gene regulation and the bioactive vitamin A metabolite all-trans-retinoic acid (RA) during postnatal development, refinement and maintenance of precise neuronal connectivity using the olfactory sensory neuron (OSN) in the olfactory epithelium (OE) of genetically modified mice as a model. We show that:Inhibition of RA receptor (RAR)-mediated transcription in OSNs reduces expression of the olfactory cyclic nucleotide-gated (CNG) ion channel, which is required for odorant receptor (OR)-mediated stimulus transduction.
