  1. 1. Tracing pathways in the ocean circulation : A temperature and salinity perspective

    Författare :Sara Berglund; Kristofer Döös; Jonas Nycander; Göran Broström; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Lagrangian trajectories; Climate modelling; Atlantic Ocean; Southern Ocean; Ocean circulation; heat; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography;

    Sammanfattning : The ocean circulation plays an essential role in our climate system. It redistributes heat, salt, carbon and other tracers across the globe, making the climate of Earth more moderate. This thesis targets density differences that are driving the ocean circulation. These differences are caused by changes in temperature and salinity. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Ocean circulation in the Amundsen Sea, West Antarctica

    Författare :Ola Kalén; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ocean; currents; icebergs; remote sensing; ocean model;

    Sammanfattning : The increase of mass loss from the Antarctic Ice Sheet is a significant contribution to global sea level rise. The most rapid changes are occurring in the Amundsen Sea area, where the thinning of the floating glaciers is assumed to be driven by the ocean. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Atmospheric and oceanic circulation from a thermodynamic perspective

    Författare :Aitor Aldama Campino; Kristofer Döös; Peter Lundberg; George Nurser; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Atmospheric circulation; Ocean circulation; Stream functions; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography;

    Sammanfattning : The climate system is continuously transporting and exchanging heat, freshwater, carbon and other tracers in different spatio-temporal scales. Therefore, analysing the system from a thermodynamic or biogeochemical framework is highly convenient. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Atlantic Water in the Nordic Seas : A satellite altimetry perspective on ocean circulation

    Författare :Sara Broomé; Johan Nilsson; Jonas Nycander; Léon Chafik; Michael A. Spall; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arctic Ocean climate; ocean heat transport; sea surface height; topographic control; Lagrangian trajectories; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography;

    Sammanfattning : The Atlantic Water in the Nordic Seas contributes to the mild climate of Northern Europe and is the main oceanic source of heat for the Arctic. The northward bound transport of the warm and saline Atlantic Water is mediated by a topographically constrained cyclonic boundary current along the Norwegian continental slope. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Some aspects of the Atlantic ocean circulation

    Författare :Rezwan Mohammad; Peter Lundberg; Johan Nilsson; Lawrence Mysak; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Oceanography; Thermohaline circulation; Vertical mixing; Altimetry; Nordic Seas; Meteorology; Meteorologi;

    Sammanfattning : The present thesis deals with the ocean circulation from two viewpoints: Pro primo, the dependence of the global thermohaline ocean circulation (THC) on the parameterization of the small-scale vertical mixing processes in the interior of the ocean, and, pro secundo, the dynamics of the circulation in the Nordic Seas. The THC is found be crucially dependent on the parameterization of the small-scale vertical mixing, two types of which have been compared: The commonly used constant diffusivity and a, physically more plausible, stability-dependent parameterization.
