11. Sulfur-Related Conservation Concerns in Marine Archaeological Wood : The Origin, Speciation and Distribution of Accumulated Sulfur with Some Remedies for the Vasa
Sammanfattning : Synchrotron-based sulfur spectroscopy reveals a common concern for marine archaeological wood from seawater: accumulation of reduced sulfur compounds in two pathways. The distribution of sulfur species in the oak wood cell structure was mapped by scanning x-ray spectro-microscopy (SXM). LÄS MER
12. The warship Vasa : A Study of Lignin, Extractives and Acids in the oak wood
Sammanfattning : The oak wood timbers of the 17th century Swedish warship Vasa are weak. The weakening has been attributed to cellulose degradation, which is more extensive in the interior of the timbers compared to the surface regions. Further, the mechanism of cellulose degradation was attributed to oxidative reactions involving iron as a catalyst. LÄS MER
13. Deterioration of recent oak by iron compound : a comparison with Vasa oak
Sammanfattning : Wood degradation in the historical warship Vasa has been studied systematically regarding the chemical and physical properties. The presence of iron(II) seems to be one important factor for the degradation of the wood, causing reduction of its tensile strength. This is unfortunately a serious problem as iron(II) compounds are abundant in Vasa wood. LÄS MER
14. Wood-living beetle diversity and Swedish forest management
Sammanfattning : Humans have impacted Fennoscandian forests for thousands of years, through grazing, burning, and since the industrial revolution increasingly through efficient industrial forestry. These impacts have changed the composition and structure of these forests, by reducing forest age, simplifying forest structure, and reducing the amount of broadleaved trees, among other things. 15. Oak as retention tree in commercial spruce forests : effects on species diversity of Saproxylic beetles and wood production
Sammanfattning : Retaining trees valuable for biodiversity is a common conservation measure. There are indications that such trees have important benefits for the diversity of many species groups. However, retaining trees may also have negative effects on timber production. LÄS MER
