  1. 1. Neutrophils versus Pathogenic Fungi : through the magnifying glass of nutritional immunity

    Författare :Maria Joanna Niemiec; Constantin F. Urban; Bernhard Hube; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neutrophils; Candida albicans; nutritional immunity; metallome; Zn; Fe;

    Sammanfattning : Neutrophils are among the first white blood cells recruited to the site of infection once microbial pathogens enter the host organism. At site, they perform a well-orchestrated chain of processes that aims to kill the microbial invader. Most prominent, neutrophils engulf microbes to inactivate them intracellularly, a process called phagocytosis. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Functional studies of Escherichia coli stringent response factor RelA

    Författare :Ievgen Dzhygyr; Vasili Hauryliuk; Jörgen Johansson; Greg Bokinsky; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Stringent response; RelA; p ppGpp; ribosome; tRNA; metabolism regulation; allosteric regulation; translation; nutritional stress; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Sammanfattning : RelA is a ribosome associated multi-domain enzyme, which plays a crucial role in adaptation ofEscherichia coli to nutritional stress as such as amino acid deficiency. It detects the deficiency of aminoacids in the cell by monitoring whether a tRNA at the acceptor site (A-site) of the ribosome is chargedwith amino acid or not. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Elderly Immigrants, Socio-economic Status and Health. An epidemiological study of cardiovascular risk factors, impaired mobility and self-reported health status

    Författare :Sonja Pudaric; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; stress; cardiovascular risk factors; IADL; impaired mobility impaired working capacity; self-reported health; socio-economic status; country of birth ethnicity; elderly people; discrimination; Socialmedicin; Social medicine; samhällsmedicin;

    Sammanfattning : Aims: To analyse the relationship between country of birth/ethnicity, socio-economic status (SES) and impaired mobility, impaired working capacity, cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors, health behaviours among those with CVD risk factors, self-reported health status, impaired instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) and all-cause mortality. Methods: Two main data sources were used: the Swedish Survey of Living Conditions (in Swedish ULF) 1986–1993, people aged 55–74 years, and the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) 1988–1994 in the USA, people aged 65–84. 4. 4. Interorganellar connectivity : From protein to lipid homeostasis

    Författare :Carlotta Peselj; Sabrina Büttner; Tim Levine; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Interorganellar connectivity; nucleus; NVJs; chronic lipid bilayer stress; glucose and phosphate exhaustion; nutritional regimes; transmembrane chaperone; IPTP; molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Bioscience;

    Sammanfattning : Interorganellar connectivity is fundamental for the maintenance of organellar and cellular functionality and viability. This is achieved and maintained by a complex network of signaling cascades, vesicle trafficking between organelles as well as by establishment of direct physical contact at membrane contact sites (MCS). 5. 5. Diet, lifestyle, antioxidants, and biomarkers of cancer risk - an epidemiological report from the Malmö Diet and Cancer cohort

    Författare :Peter Wallström; Nutritionsepidemiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; onkologi; cancer; Public health; epidemiology; Folkhälsa; epidemiologi; cancerology; Cytologi; oncology; Cytology; Alcohol; Obesity; Smoking; Autoantibodies; Glutathione S-transferase; Oxidative stress; Vitamin E; Carotene; Body composition; Vegetables; Fruits; Cross-sectional; Adult; Diet surveys;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis examines associations between a number of epidemiological or biological markers of cancer risk and oxidative stress, in order to achieve a better understanding of how diet, lifestyle, and genetic factors contribute to the occurrence of oxidative stress. Data from the Malmö Diet and Cancer (MDC) cohort was used. LÄS MER
