6. The Baltic Sea marine system - human impact and natural variations
Sammanfattning : The environmental state of the Baltic Sea system is influenced by both natural and anthropogenic factors. Water exchange with the adjacent ocean and within the system depend on large-scale atmospheric circulation and properties of the straits separating the different sub-basins. LÄS MER
7. Sustainable management of dredged sediments : potential recovery of valuable compounds
Sammanfattning : Dredging of sediments occurs worldwide to increase water depth in harbours, bays, lakes and rivers, as well as to recover aquatic ecosystems. Landfilling and open-ocean discharge are traditional disposal routes for dredged material. However, the methods are restricted by environmental and legal concerns. LÄS MER
8. Factors controlling pelagic communities of freshwater ciliates and heliozoans
Sammanfattning : Ciliate diversity and seasonal succession were studied during two years in oligotrophic, acidic Lake Njupfatet. Maximum ciliate abundance occurred shortly after ice-out. After thefirst year, the lake was neutralised by liming. Liming caused changes in the bacterioplanktonand phytoplankton communities, but no change in ciliate diversity. LÄS MER
9. Influence of resuspension on sediment-water solute exchange and particle transport in marine environments
Sammanfattning : Marine sediments contain a large pool of nutrients, which if released would contribute to increased eutrophication, in spite of decreased nutrient loads from land and atmosphere. Resuspension is a process, which might influence the release of nutrients from the sediment to the overlying water. LÄS MER
10. Greenhouse Gas Dynamics in Ice-covered Lakes Across Spatial and Temporal Scales
Sammanfattning : Lakes play a major role in the global carbon (C) cycle, despite making up a small area of earth’s surface. Lakes receive, transport and process sizable amounts of C, emitting a substantial amount of the greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4), into the atmosphere. LÄS MER
