21. Crack growth paths in rolling contact fatigue — Numerical predictions
Sammanfattning : Rolling contact fatigue (RCF) cracks in railway wheels and rails are costly and complex to deal with. Despite the extensive research efforts that have been put into understanding the mechanisms and developing appropriate predictive models for RCF crack growth, there are still a lot of open questions. 22. Higher order finite difference methods for wave propagation problems
Sammanfattning : Wave propagation is described by the wave equation, or in the time-periodic case, by the Helmholtz equation. For problems with small wavelengths, high order discretizations must be used to resolve the solution. Two different techniques for finding compact finite difference schemes of high order are studied and compared. LÄS MER
23. Simulation of dynamic instabilities during high rate deformation of ductile bars and plates
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, some of the phenomena occurring in plates and cylindrical bars subjected to dynamic loading are investigated. Numerical simulations using a dynamic finite element code are performed for a number of different sized specimens with various initial surface imperfections. Typically imposed loading velocities are in the range 10m/s.. LÄS MER
24. Numerical modelling of time-dependent metamaterials with the FDTD method
Sammanfattning : Metamaterials are artificial materials, usually composed of so-called meta-atoms, with electromagnetic properties which cannot be found in naturally occurring materials. In this work we study the properties of time-dependent metamaterials (meaning that their electromagnetic properties are varying with time), as well as their potential applications. LÄS MER
25. Numerical modelling of positive electrical discharges in long air gaps
Sammanfattning : This dissertation deals with research on the numerical modelling of electrical discharges in laboratory long air gaps excited with positive switching impulses. It begins with the preliminary work of several scientists during the last decades, making a detailed analysis of different approaches for modelling all the stages in a full discharge. LÄS MER
