1. Modeling disturbances of cholinergic systems : possible relevance for schizophrenia
Sammanfattning : Schizophrenia is a severe, chronic mental disorder. The etiology remains unknown but alterations in cholinergic neurotransmission is one, among other, disturbances in the brain that have been implicated in schizophrenia. LÄS MER
2. Somatostatin neurotransmission : studies on experimentally induced cognitive changes and Alzheimer’s disease
Sammanfattning : Several neuropeptides are widely distributed in regions of the central nervous system (CNS) which are associated with cognitive functions. Multiple studies on postmortem Alzheimer's disease (AD) brains have shown depleted neuropeptide content and morphological abnormalities of somatostatin (SS)-containing interneurons in the hippocampus and the cerebral cortex. 3. Dementia with Lewy bodies - a clinical and neurological approach
Sammanfattning : Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is a dementia disorder, clinically characterized by fluctuating cognitive impairment, attention deficits, visual hallucinations, parkinsonism and other neuropsychiatric features. Sensitivity to neuroleptic medication is a common finding. LÄS MER
4. Modulation of acetylcholine release by serotonergic 5-HT1A and 5-HT1B receptors : a microdialysis study in the awake rat
Sammanfattning : The aim of the thesis was to investigate the effects of the 5-HT1A receptor antagonist robalzotan (NAD-299) and the 5-HT1B receptor antagonist NAS-181 ((R)-(+)-2-(3-morpholinomethyl-2Hchromen-8-yl) oxymethyl-morpholine methanesulfonate) on cholinergic, glutamatergic and GABAergic neurotransmission in the rat brain in vivo. The extracellular levels of acetylcholine (ACh), glutamate (Glu) and GABA were monitored by microdialysis in the frontal cortex (FC) and ventral hippocampus (VHipp) in separate groups of awake rats. 5. On the role of forebrain cholinergic innervation for phencyclidine-induced behaviors and gene expression patterns
Sammanfattning : The basalo-cortical cholinergic innervation reaches neural targets in cortex cerebri where it modulates the incoming sensory information, regulating arousal, attention, vigilance, memory and cognition. Progressive de generation of the cholinergic neurons in the basal forebrain is considered a hallmark of Alzheimer ’s disease related to cognitive impairment in this condition. LÄS MER
