6. Pattern-recognition receptors and neutrophils in cancer inflammation
Sammanfattning : Chronic inflammation, induced by the use of tobacco and alcohol, or caused by infections has long been suggested to constitute a risk factor for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). The innate immunity is the first line of defense against pathogens, comprising physical and chemical barriers, anti-microbial peptides, pattern-recognition receptors (PRRs) as well as different kinds of cells, including neutrophils. 7. Innate immunity atherosclerosis : signaling pattern recognition receptors and an antimicrobial peptide
Sammanfattning : Atherosclerosis, a disease characterized by fibroinflammatory lipid lesions in the arterial wall, is the leading cause of mortality in the Western world. For decades research has been aimed at dissecting the pathogenesis of this multifactorial disease. LÄS MER
8. Molecular biology of barnacle Balanus improvisus settlement
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to investigate molecular mechanisms of various aspects of barnacle settlement, using the acorn barnacle Balanus improvisus. This barnacle is a common fouling species and a model organism for studies in settlement biology, in particular in relation to antifouling research. LÄS MER
9. Molecular characterization of estrogen receptors with focus on breast cancer
Sammanfattning : Estrogen signaling is mediated by estrogen receptors (ERs), ERα and ERβ. Aberrant estrogen signaling is involved in breast cancer development. ERα is one of the key biomarkers for diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. Unlike ERα, ERβ is still not introduced as a marker for diagnosis and established as a target of therapy. LÄS MER
10. Genetic studies on cardiovascular disease - identification of novel drug targets
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to identify novel potential drug targets of cardiovascular disease with a focus on G-protein coupled receptors. We identified a common genetic variant of the ATP receptor P2Y11, where an alanine is substituted with a threonine at position 87 of the P2Y11 receptor that increases the risk of developing acute myocardial infarction.
