  1. 16. Mitochondrial involvement in cell death : release of pro-apoptotic proteins

    Författare :Erik Norberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : In addition to the role of the mitochondria in energy metabolism, these organelles play a key role in cell death signaling. In particular, mitochondrial alterations, such as stimulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation, decreased ATP synthesis, loss of membrane potential and the release of pro-apoptotic proteins from the mitochondrial intermembrane space (IMS), have been shown to be involved in, and often responsible for, various manifestations of cell death. 2. 17. Anti-herpes simplex virus activities of sulfomannan oligosaccharide PI-88 and disulfated cyclitols

    Författare :Maria Ekblad; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :herpes simplex virus; antiviral drugs; viral glycoproteins; heparan sulfate mimetic; PI-88;

    Sammanfattning : Herpes simplex virus (HSV) initiates invasion of human cells by binding to the cell surface heparan sulfate (HS) glycosaminoglycan chains. This step is mediated by the viral envelope glycoproteins gC and/or gB. LÄS MER

  3. 18. Interaction of genetic and environmental factors in childhood asthma and allergy

    Författare :Anna Gref; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Asthma and allergy are the most common chronic childhood diseases. Their occurrences are influenced by both genetic and environmental factors, although the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. LÄS MER

  4. 19. Design and analysis of wireframe DNA nanostructures

    Författare :Erik Benson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : In the last decades, the powerful self-assembly properties of DNA have been harnessed to produce complex structures at the nanoscale with high precision and yield. DNA origami is one of the most robust examples of this, where a 7000-nucleotide strand of biological origin is folded by hybridizing with hundreds of synthetic oligonucleotides, the programmed sequence of these “staple strands” determines the shape of the assembled object. 5. 20. Interleukin 16 in Atherosclerosis and Cardiovascular Disease

    Författare :Caitriona Grönberg; Kardiovaskulär forskning - immunitet och ateroskleros; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Interleukin 16 IL-16 ; atherosclerosis; cardiovascular disease; Immune system; cytokine; carotid plaque; ;

    Sammanfattning : Background and aim - The development of clinical manifectations due to an eroded or ruptured atherosclerotic plaque, or occluded vessel, are one of the major causes of death world wide. It has been known for some time that atherosclerosis develops due to retention and modification of LDL particles in the vessel wall and the subsequent triggering of the immune system. LÄS MER
