  1. 1. Regulation of cytokine-induced nitric oxide production in insulin-producing cells

    Författare :Malin Flodström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; Diabetes; pancreatic islets; insulin-producing cells; cytokines; nitric oxide; inducible nitric oxide synthase; nuclear factor-kappaB; interferon regulatory factor-1; arginine; citrulline; argininosuccinate synthetase; insulin release; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology;

    Sammanfattning : Cytokine-induced expression of the inducible form of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and production of nitric oxide (NO) may contribute to pancreatic β-cell damage during the development of type 1 diabetes. iNOS catalyses the conversion of arginine into citrulline and NO, a reaction regulated by the amount of expressed iNOS enzyme and by the cellular availability of arginine. 2. 2. Cytokine regulation of pancreatic -cell function with special reference to the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes

    Författare :Johnny Sternesjö; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; Diabetes; pancreatic islets; insulin secretion; cytokines; nitric oxide; streptozotocin; NOD mice; proteasome; nuclear factor-kappaB; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology;

    Sammanfattning : Cytokines produced by inflammatory cells have been implicated in the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes. The overall aim of the present work was to test how different cytokines, supposed to be present in the insulitic lesion, could influence the function of islets of Langerhans. LÄS MER

  3. 3. The nuclear factor k[kappa]B signal transduction pathway : its role in atherogenesis and intimal hyperplasia

    Författare :De-xiu Bu; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Atherosclerosis; intimal hyperplasia; NF-kappaB; NGAL; Telomerase; Leukotriene B4;

    Sammanfattning : Vascular inflammation is a hallmark of major cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, and also suggested as a critical component implicated in intimal hyperplasia. Given its central role in regulating expression of inflammatory genes, the nuclear factor kappaB (NF-kappaB) signal transduction pathway was postulated to play an important role in these pathological processes. 4. 4. Glucocorticosteroid therapy and steroid resistance in inflammatory bowel disease

    Författare :Lars Flood; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Ulcerative colitis; Crohn s disease; Steroid resistance; Glucocorticoid receptor; Nuclear Factor kappaB; Activator Protein 1; Adrenocorticotropin stimulation test; Metallothionein; Rofleponide;

    Sammanfattning : Ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) are diseases of unknown aetiology often referred to as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Glucocorticosteroids (GCS) have been used since the 1950's to treat acute attacks of these diseases. LÄS MER

  5. 5. MEKK-1 and NF-κB Signaling in Pancreatic Islet Cell Death

    Författare :Dariush Mokhtari; Nils Welsh; Michael Welsh; Anders Tengholm; Shanta Persaud; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Cell biology; MEKK-1; JNK; human islets; β-cells; siRNA; apoptosis; cell death; MAPK; nitric oxide; cytokines; streptozotocin; c-Rel; NF-κB; Cellbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease resulting in the selective destruction of the insulin producing β-cells in the pancreas. Pro-inflammatory cytokines and the free radical nitric oxide (NO) have been implicated in mediating the destruction of β-cells, possibly through activation of the mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPKs) JNK, ERK and p38.
