1. Multifunctional roles of plasmin in inflammation : Studies of animal models on rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, wound healing and infection
Sammanfattning : Plasmin has been suggested to be involved in degradation of extracellular matrix (ECM) and tissue remodeling during a number of physiological and pathological processes. The aims of this thesis were to study the functional roles of plasmin during pathological inflammation in autoimmune and nonautoimmune disease models of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), multiple sclerosis (MS), wound healing and infection. 2. The impact of autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) on rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and the impact of RA on AITD
Sammanfattning : Study I. Background: The Swedish National Patient Register (NPR) is a unique source for the identification of large cohorts of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. The general validity of this register has been reported to be high. LÄS MER
3. Autoantibodies and the Type I Interferon System in the Etiopathogenesis of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Sammanfattning : In sera remitted for anti-nuclear antibody (ANA) analysis, the supplement of a sensitive anti-SSA/Ro ELISA to the conventional ANA screening by immunofluorescence (IF) revealed that one fourth of the individuals with IF-ANA negative, but SSA/Ro ELISA positive sera, had systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) or cutaneous LE. Consequently, adding a sensitive anti-SSA/Ro ELISA to the ANA screening is valuable for the serological detection of ANA negative SLE/LE patients. LÄS MER
4. Beta cell function in autoimmune diabetes in young adults
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents the results from a study of the first four years of diabetes in 879 patients aged 15-34 years at diagnosis. The aims of this study were to compare clinical classification with the presence of autoantibodies, to study the natural course of beta cell function during the first years of disease and to define predictive factors for the remaining beta cell function after diagnosis. 5. Genetic and functional studies on the thyroid hormone axis
Sammanfattning : This thesis has two main parts. The first is based on the first three papers with a focus on understanding the etiology and pathogenesis of thyroid malfunction and its effects on different organs. LÄS MER
