16. Denitrification in a Non-nitrifying Activated Sludge System Employing Recirculation from a Tertiary Nitrification Unit
Sammanfattning : A non-nitrifying, denitrifying activated sludge system has been demonstrated to give high denitrification rates and to be a useful component in a municipal wastewater treatment plant where partial nitrogen removal is required. One useful configuration is where clarified effluent from a non-nitrifying activated sludge system is nitrified in a tertiary nitrification unit and recirculated to the activated sludge system for denitrification. 17. Risk of nitrous oxide emissions and potential of bioaugmentation when treating digester supernatant via nitrification-denitrification
Sammanfattning : This thesis examines two different impacts of sidestream treatment of digester supernatant via nitrification-denitrification in a sequenced batch reactor (SBR). One of the impacts is the detrimental formation of nitrous oxide, and the other is the positive boosting of nitrifiers to the mainstream process through bioaugmentation. LÄS MER
18. Bioassays for the determination of nitrification inhibition
Sammanfattning : Requirements for nitrogen reduction in wastewater treatmentplants were introduced in Sweden in the early 1990s. Thiswas a governmental move to reduce the nitrogen discharges tothe Baltic and Kattegatt in order to prevent eutrophication. The nitrification process in wastewater treatment plants isperformed by nitrifying bacteria. 19. Nitrification and Nitrifying Bacterial Communities in Coniferous Forest Soils : Effects of Liming and Clear-Cutting
Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with the effects of liming and clear-cutting on nitrification in hemi-boreal and northern temperate coniferous forest soils. The approach has been to study both the potential nitrification and the community structure of the ammonia-oxidising bacteria, which carry out the first step of autotrophic nitrification. LÄS MER
20. Soil-living archaea: Influence of pH, carbon and nitrogen on their abundance and activity
Sammanfattning : During the last decade it has been discovered that around 2% of the soil-living prokaryotes belong to the domain Archaea. In many soils the most abundant archaeal group is the ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) that, in addition to ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), preform the first and rate-limiting step in the nitrification process.
