16. Perinatal brain injury - markers and mediators. Non-protein-bound iron and pro-inflammatory cytokines in newborn infants and neonatal pigs
Sammanfattning : Two groups of newborn infants have an increased risk for perinatal brain injury; preterm infants and term infants subjected to birth asphyxia. Experimental studies indicate that hypoxic-ischemic insults in the perinatal period initiate a secondary neurotoxic cascade including formation of toxic reactive oxygen species as well as an inflammatory response with elevated levels of potentially neurotoxic cytokines. 17. Infantile colic. Risk factors in pregnancy, maternal reports and outcome at 4 years of age
Sammanfattning : AIM: To study infantile colic in terms of occurrence, risk factors in pregnancy, distress patterns, caregiving practices, and outcome. STUDY DESIGNS: Paper I: Population study, 376 mothers and newborn infants, diaries or telephone interviews. Paper II: 116 colic and 119 control cases, telephone interviews, and diaries. LÄS MER
18. Cerebral Injury in Perinatal Asphyxia, epidemiological, clinical, neurophysiological and neuromatabolic investigations
Sammanfattning : Perinatal asphyxia with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is the most important cause of perinatal mortality and cerebral palsy (CP) in infants born at term. The aim of the thesis was to investigate epidemiology of perinatal asphyxia, and to investigate early clinical neurological symptoms after perinatal asphyxia in relation to cerebral glucose metabolism (CMRgl) measured by 18-FDG-PET, neurophysiological function, some biochemical markers, also in relation to long-term outcome. 19. Delayed cord clamping in Nepal-Evidence for implementation
Sammanfattning : The aims of this thesis were to investigate effects of timing of umbilical cord clamping on newborn health, and on infant outcomes up to 12 months of age in a high-risk population and to explore the context of implementing changed umbilical cord clamping practices in Nepal.A randomised controlled trial with 540 late preterm and term infants born by normal vaginal delivery was set up at a maternity hospital in Kathmandu, Nepal. 20. Being Born Large for Gestational Age : Metabolic and Epidemiological Studies
Sammanfattning : Obesity is a major health problem in the Western world. Mean birth weight has increased during the last 25 years. One explanation is that the proportion of large for gestational age (LGA) infants has increased. Such infants risk developing obesity, cardiovascular disease and diabetes later in life. LÄS MER
