1. Serum Amyloid A Protein (SAA) in Healthy and Infected Individuals
Sammanfattning : Serum amyloid A protein (SAA) is an acute phase protein that has recently gained increasing interest as a potential marker for disease and treatment monitoring. We investigated SAA and CRP levels in (a) patients with various common infectious diseases (n=98), (b) patients with pyelonephritis (n=37) versus patients with cystitis (n=32), (c) healthy individuals of varying ages (n=231), (d) very immature newborn infants with or without nosocomial infections (NIs) (n=72) and (e) patients with bacterial infections treated with cefuroxime (n=81). 2. Skin-to-skin contact and suckling in early postpartum : effects on temperature, breastfeeding and mother-infant interaction
Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this thesis was to explore the role of closeness versus separation on infant and maternal temperature adaptation, breastfeeding outcome and mother-infant interaction. In addition, we aimed to study a potential influence of swaddling on all outcomes measured. LÄS MER
3. Neonatal water and heat exchange : The influence of environmental factors and infant maturity
Sammanfattning : The environment provided by commonly used infant incubators, the effect of radiantheat and exposure to cold air on the exchange of water and heat between newborninfants and their environment, and the water loss through the skin of infants born at24-25 weeks of gestation were investigated. The evaporation of water from the skinwas measured by the gradient method. LÄS MER
4. Human newborn behavior during exposure to maternal and other odors
Sammanfattning : Olfaction appears to play a pivotal role in immediate postnatal interactions between mammalian mothers and their offspring. The present study examined: (1) whether and how the newborn human infant and its mother communicate by means of olfaction; (2) the role of amniotic fluid (AF) and breast odors in such communication; (3) olfactory learning by neonates. 5. Immediate skin-to-skin contact for very preterm and low birth weight infants : from newborn physiology to mortality reduction
Sammanfattning : There is a contrast between the incidence of low birth weight and the contents and outcomes of neonatal care in high- versus middle- and low-income countries. Most of the neonatal deaths worldwide are attributed to low birth weight, occur within the first three postnatal days and can be prevented without intensive care. LÄS MER
