There are currently 5 members which make up this family: nerve growth factor (NGF), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), neurotrophin-3 (NT-3), neurotrophin-4(NT-4) and neurotrophin-6 (NT-6), which so far is only described in fish.     Sammanfattning : The classical neurotrophic factor hypothesis describes the neurotrophins as retrograde signalling factors supporting the survival of postmitotic neurons during the development. Knock-out mice for the neurotrophins and/or their receptors have been generated and their analyses gave new insights in the temporal expression and particular functions of these factors during development.     Sammanfattning : Asthma, sarcoidosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are inflammatory pulmonary diseases, all being characterized by tissue inflammation, tissue damage (airway remodeling) and loss of lung function. In order to increase possibilities to find new biomarkers, drug targets and better treatment options for the patients, further research on the underlying mechanisms driving the inflammation and airway remodeling in these diseases are required.
