  1. 1. Regeneration of Peripheral Nerves. The role of protein kinases, with emphasis on neurotrophic factor stimulation

    Författare :Peter Wiklund; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NT-4; NT-3; NGF; MAPK; PKG; PKA; PKC; nodose ganglion; DRG; conditioning effect; neurotrophic factors; protein kinases; peripheral; nerve regeneration; BDNF; GDNF; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of protein kinases in peripheral nerve regeneration, with the use of dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and nodose ganglia explants from adult mice. The effects of neurotrophic factor stimulation and protein kinase inhibition were studied for long (days) and short term (minutes) effects. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Neurotrophic Factor Receptors in the Normal and Injured Visual System : Focus on Retinal Ganglion Cells

    Författare :Niclas Lindqvist; Finn Hallböök; Anders Kvanta; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurosciences; cell survival; gene expression; neurotrophic factor; receptor; retina; visual system; Neurovetenskap; Neurology; Neurologi; Developmental Neurosciences; Medicinsk utvecklings- och neurobiologi;

    Sammanfattning : The focus of this thesis is the life and death of adult retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). RGCs are neurons that convey visual information from the retina to higher centers in the brain. LÄS MER

  3. 3. BDNF, impulsiveness and avoidant focused coping in suicide attempters

    Författare :LIVIA AMBRUS; Lund Psykiatri; []
    Nyckelord :BDNF; Aviodant coping; Suicide Attempters; HPA axis; Impulsvieness; BDNF; Avoidant focused coping; HPA axis; attempted suicide; impulsiveness;

    Sammanfattning : Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is an important protein for neuroplasticity and neurogenesis. In this thesis the role of BDNF, in suicidal behaviour was investigated with focus on possible risk factors for suicidal behaviour such as avoidant focused coping, dysfuntional personality traits like impulsiveness and hyperactivity of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis. 4. 4. The use of adipose derived stem cells in spinal cord and peripheral nerve repair

    Författare :Mallappa K Kolar; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; spinal cord injury; peripheral nerve injury; adipose derived stem cells; regeneration; neurotrophic factor; angiogenic factor;

    Sammanfattning : Clinically, injuries affecting the spinal cord or peripheral nerves can leave those affected with severe disability and, at present, there are limited options for treatment. Peripheral nerve injury with a significant gap between the proximal and distal stumps is currently treated with autologous nerve grafting but this is limited by availability of donor nerve and has associated morbidities. 5. 5. Transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells and injections of microRNA as therapeutics for nervous system repair

    Författare :Mallappa K. Kolar; Lev N. Novikov; Paul J. Kingham; Mikael Wiberg; Elisabet Åkesson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; spinal cord injury; peripheral nerve injury; mesenchymal stem cells; regeneration; neurotrophic factor; angiogenic factor;

    Sammanfattning : Traumatic injuries to the spinal cord (SCI) and peripheral nerve (PNI) affect several thousand people worldwide every year. At present, there is no effective treatment for SCI and despite continuous improvements in microsurgical reconstructive techniques for PNI, many patients are still left with permanent, devastating neurological dysfunction.
