11. Neuroprotection and neurogenesis after experimental stroke
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, two potential endogenous mechanisms for neuronal survival and repair have been investigated in a rat model of stroke, middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO): signaling of the GDNF family of neurotrophic factors, and neurogenesis from endogenous progenitor cells. As determined by in situ hybridization for GDNF family ligand and receptor genes, MCAO caused widespread upregulation of both components of the functional GDNF receptor, c-Ret and GFRalpha1, indicating that GDNF may be a survival signal in stroke. 12. Neural circuits engaged in mastication and orofacial nociception
Sammanfattning : A deeper understanding of both movement control and the effects of nociceptor inputs on our motor systems is critical for proper clinical diagnosis of musculo-skeletal dysfunctions and for development of novel rehabilitation schemes. In the jaw system, masticatory movements are produced by a central pattern generator (CPG) located in the brainstem. LÄS MER
13. Effect of Normal Aging on Emotional Processing and Impact of Emotion on Memory : Psychophysiological and Cognitive Findings
Sammanfattning : It has long been thought that aging is accompanied by an emotional flattening. Although a different view has started to emerge recently, studies investigating psychophysiological responses in reaction to affective stimuli so far have reported an age-related reduction of the affective response. 14. Effects of ionising and non-ionising radiation in cell systems and a rat model for immuno-therapy
Sammanfattning : The most malignant brain tumour, glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), has an utterly bad prognosis. In spite of all available therapy, the mean survival time is less than a year. In the unique BRIGTT project (Brain Immuno Gene Tumour Therapy), patients at the Dept of Neurosurgery. LÄS MER
15. The Cerebello-Olivary Feedback System
Sammanfattning : The pathway from the deep cerebellar nuclei to the inferior olive, the nucleo-olivary pathway, is known to be inhibitory. The physiological and temporal properties, as well as the localisation, of the nucleo-olivary pathway were characterised in the decerebrate ferret. LÄS MER
