1. Rarity in boreal stream: patterns, causes and consequences
Sammanfattning : Patterns of site occupancy among boreal stream insects were studied in central Sweden with focus on sparsely distributed species and the role of dispersal and niche limitations. In the study of dispersal limitation, I found that effects of an extraordinarily harsh winter in small to medium-sized streams were strongest in sites located in small streams and far from lake outlets. 2. Tar and timber: Governing forest commons in seventeenth century Northern Finland
Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates how peasants regulated and shared forest resources in North Ostrobothnia during the seventeenth century where large-scale tar and timber production took place. The forests were owned as commons by peasant communities on village and parish level and became increasingly exploited during the century. LÄS MER
3. Complexity Theory and Physics Education Research : The Case of Student Retention in Physics and Related Degree Programmes
Sammanfattning : This thesis explores the use of complexity theory in Physics Education Research as a way to examine the issue of student retention (a university’s ability to retain its students). University physics education is viewed through the concepts of nestedness and networked interactions. LÄS MER
4. On Confidence Intervals and Two-Sided Hypothesis Testing
Sammanfattning : This thesis consists of a summary and six papers, dealing with confidence intervals and two-sided tests of point-null hypotheses. In Paper I, we study Bayesian point-null hypothesis tests based on credible sets. A decision-theoretic justification for tests based on central credible intervals is presented. LÄS MER
5. Biodiversity in fragmented boreal forests : assessing the past, the present and the future
Sammanfattning : The aims of this thesis are to (1) analyze the predictability (indicators) of plant and fungal species diversity in old-growth forests, and (2) assess the history and biodiversity of woodland key habitats (WKHs) and their potential to maintain species diversity in fragmented boreal forest landscapes. Predictability was explored in Granlandet nature reserve, an unexploited landscape composed of discrete old-growth Picea forest patches of varying size isolated by wetland, reflecting conditions of insular biota at stochastic equilibrium.
