  1. 1. Sutures bridging nerve defects

    Författare :Peter Scherman; Malmö Handkirurgi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; orthopaedics; traumatology; Surgery; continuous longitudinal sutures; nerve repair; nerve regeneration; nerve defect; Kirurgi; ortopedi; traumatologi;

    Sammanfattning : A new and simple method for the repair of nerve defects, in which sutures alone are used to guide regeneration between the nerve endings, was developed. Bilateral seven to 17 mm rat sciatic nerve defects were bridged by continuous longitudinal sutures with or without different modifications, by conventional autologous nerve grafts or direct repair under tension as controls. 2. 2. Cell activation and nerve regeneration following peripheral nerve injury

    Författare :Annika Widerberg; Malmö Handkirurgi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurology; nerve regeneration; Nerve injury; conditioning lesion; nerve graft; tourniquet compression; vibration; DRG; Schwann cell; p75; CPON; neurofysiologi; neuropsykologi; Neurologi; neurophysiology; neuropsychology;

    Sammanfattning : The effect of short time vibration exposure and tourniquet compression on nerve regeneration in rats was studied with special reference to cell activation. One of the hindlimbs was conditioned by either vibration exposure (5 hours / day - 5 consecutive days) or compression (150-300 mmHg for 30-120 minutes), which was followed by a recovery period of 0-7 days. 3. 3. Nerve gap repair by the use of artificial conduits and cultured cells

    Författare :Daniel Kalbermatten; Mikael Wiberg; Ulrich Mennen; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; adipose stem cells; cell matrix; fibrin; nerve conduit; nerve gap; Surgery; Kirurgi; kirurgi; Surgery;

    Sammanfattning : Peripheral nerve injuries are often associated with loss of nerve tissue and require autologous nerve grafts to provide a physical substrate for axonal growth. This thesis investigates the use of fibrin as both a tubular conduit to guide nerve regeneration and also as a matrix material to suspend various regenerative cell types within/on poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) nerve conduits. 4. 4. Development of biosynthetic conduits for peripheral nerve repair

    Författare :Aleksandra McGrath; Liudmila N Novikova; John Haycock; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Biosynthetic conduit; Mesenchymal stem cells; Nerve graft; Nerve tissue engineering; Peripheral nerve injury; Schwann cells;

    Sammanfattning : Peripheral nerve injuries are often associated with significant loss of nervous tissue leading to poor restoration of function following repair of injured nerves. Although the injury gap could be bridged by autologous nerve graft, the limited access to donor material and additional morbidity such as loss of sensation and scarring have prompted a search for biosynthetic nerve transplants. 5. 5. Sensory neuronal protection & improving regeneration after peripheral nerve injury

    Författare :Andrew McKay Hart; Mikael Wiberg; Angus McGrouther; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurosciences; cell death; TUNEL; optical disection; dorsal root ganglion; peripheral nerve; nerve conduit; Schwann cell; glial growth factor; leukaemia inhibitory factor; acetyl-L-carnitine; N-acetyl-cysteine; Neurovetenskap; Neurology; Neurologi; neurokirurgi; Neurosurgery;

    Sammanfattning : Peripheral nerve trauma is a common cause of considerable functional morbidity, and healthcare expenditure. Particularly in the ~15% of injuries unsuitable for primary repair, standard clinical management results in inadequate sensory restitution in the majority of cases, despite the rigorous application of complex microsurgical techniques.
