1. Aspects of neonatal intensive care and anesthesia : Thermal balance and respiratory management
Sammanfattning : This thesis is based on four articles originating from three studies conducted in the neonatal intensive care unit and the children’s operating deparment at Uppsala University Hospital, Sweden. The overall aim was to obtain new knowledge about thermal balance and care environment in extremely preterm infants during skin-to-skin care (SSC), evaluate different methods of intraoperative monitoring of carbon dioxide (CO2), and to investigate how different levels of inhaled oxygen affect infants’ oxygenation during anesthesia and surgery. 2. Neonatal water and heat exchange : The influence of environmental factors and infant maturity
Sammanfattning : The environment provided by commonly used infant incubators, the effect of radiantheat and exposure to cold air on the exchange of water and heat between newborninfants and their environment, and the water loss through the skin of infants born at24-25 weeks of gestation were investigated. The evaporation of water from the skinwas measured by the gradient method. LÄS MER
3. Perspectives of Deep Learning for Neonatal Sepsis Detection
Sammanfattning : Newborns, whether born at term or preterm, are highly vulnerable and face life-threatening situations during their initial weeks of life every year. Even with hospitalization in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and careful clinical monitoring, identifying infection-related incidents like sepsis is a challenging task. LÄS MER
4. Lung function in alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency
Sammanfattning : Hereditary alpha1-antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency predisposes to liver disease and emphysema. The aims of the studies upon which thesis is based were to investigate the natural course of lung function and risk factors for lung disease in AAT-deficient adolescents (PiZZ and PiSZ) and adults (PiZZ), and to study clinical manifestations in AAT-deficient adults. 5. Neonatal respiratory control : inspiration, inflammation and the prostaglandin E2 pathway
Sammanfattning : Immature or deficient autonomic control is a common problem in infants born at a premature age, and is of central importance in apneas. The pre- and perinatal development of the brainstem neural circuits that control autonomic functions is vital for survival after birth and for the regulation of breathing movements. LÄS MER
