2. Sensory neuropeptides and nitric oxide in nasal vascular regulation
Sammanfattning : The role of sensory neuropeptides and nitric oxide in vascular regulation was investigated in the pig nasal mucosa in vivo using arterial blood flow measurements and acoustic rhinometry for analysis of capacitance function. Moreover, the effects of heavy physical exercise, a-adrenoceptor agonists, nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibition, L-arginine, nitric oxide (NO) gas, histamine and capsaicin on nasal cavity NO levels and nasal cavity volume, were investigated in healthy subjects. 3. Nasal mucosal reactivity after long-time exposure to building dampness
Sammanfattning : An association between working and/or residing in damp buildings and respiratory health has been reported in a number of studies. A major limitation has been difficulty in objectively verifying any effects on the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract in order to explain symptoms of irritated eyes, nasal congestion and cough that are often reported by occupants in buildings with indoor air problems. 4. Exploring eicosanoids as biomarkers in severe chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps
Sammanfattning : Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is one of the most common inflammatory chronic conditions, leading to a persistent nasal congestion, nasal discharge, and a loss of smell. Despite sinus surgery and frequent use of oral corticosteroids, a large proportion of individuals with CRS are difficult to treat and have recurrent inflammation. LÄS MER
5. Rhinostereometry and laser doppler flowmetry : simultaneous measurements of inflammation and steroid effects in normal and allergic human nasal mucosa
Sammanfattning : This thesis describes the development of a combination of non-invasive methods for measuring different aspects of inflammation simultaneously in a selected part of the human nasal mucosa. It also describes use of this combination in studies of allergic nasal mucosa and the effects of intranasal steroids before and during the allergy season. LÄS MER
