  1. 1. Reward-related genes and alcohol dependence

    Författare :Sara Landgren; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; alcohol; dependence; reward; smoking; body weight; gene; polymorphism; nAChR; ghrelin; GHS-R1A;

    Sammanfattning : Introduction: The rewarding properties of alcohol are mediated by the brain reward systems, specifically by the cholinergic-dopaminergic reward link, involving both nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) as well as the ghrelin signalling system. The susceptibility for developing alcohol dependence is influenced by genetic factors. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Studies on new pharmacological treatments for alcohol dependence - and the importance of objective markers of alcohol consumption

    Författare :Andrea deBejczy; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; alcohol dependence; mirtazapine; varenicline; org 25935; alcohol markers; phosphatidylethanol; randomized controlled clinical trials RCT ; treatment; glycine transporter inhibitor; nAChR;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis will guide you through three randomized controlled trials (RCT) on three pharmacotherapies for alcohol dependence; the antidepressant drug mirtazapine, the smoking cessation drug varenicline and the glycine-uptake inhibitor Org 25935. The mirtazapine study was an investigator initiated single-center harm-reduction study with alcohol consumption measured by self-report in a diary as main outcome. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Interactions between neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, N-methyl-aspartate receptors and beta-amyloid in the brain of genetically modified mice : implications for Alheimer's disease

    Författare :Christina Unger; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Abeta; Alzheimer s disease; APP; nAChR; NMDA receptors; synaptophysin; transgenic mice; treatment;

    Sammanfattning : The amyloid hypothesis is one of the leading theories in the search for the cause of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and is based on the theory that hyperproduction and accumulation of amyloid betapeptide (Abeta) in the brain triggers the disruption of neuronal and synaptic function, thereby ultimately leading to neurodegeneration and dementia. Some of the crucial questions are if Abeta has a neuronal function in the brain and how it interacts with the neurotransmitter system in AD. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Biochemical and immunological characterization of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor from Torpedo marmorata electric organ

    Författare :Lena Elfman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Neuronal information transfer in vertebrate skeletal muscle and in the electric organ of e.g. Torpedo is mediated by acetylcholine (ACh). The nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) complex translates the binding of ACh into permeability changes. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Development of nicotinic receptor ligands for positron emission tomography - from in vitro to in vivo : Binding studies of neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors using different ³H-, ¹1C- and `6Br - labeled ligands

    Författare :Wiebke Sihver; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurosciences; nicotinic acetylcholine receptor; PET-ligand; in vitro; in vivo; Alzheimer s disease; Neurovetenskap; Neurology; Neurologi; medicinsk farmakologi; Medical Pharmacology;

    Sammanfattning : Neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are involved in central processes, such as cognitive functionand memory, and play a critical role in neuropathological changes in Alzheimer's disease (AD). The in vivocharacterization of nAChRs by positron emission tomography (PET) may increase our understanding of thefunctional implications of these receptors in AD and their early changes during this disease.
