  1. 11. Cholinesterase inhibitors in Alzheimer's disease : an experimental study on mechanisms of interatcion with muscarinic and nicotinic receptors and neuroprotection

    Författare :Anne-Lie Svensson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Alzheimer s disease Cholinesterase inhibitors Muscarinic receptors Nicotinic receptors Acetylcholine release Neuroprotection B-amyloid apolipoprotein E;

    Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate the mechanisms beyond the interaction of cholinesterase inhibitors (ChEIs) with the cholinergic system in brain, with emphasis on their regulatory and mechanistic effects on subtypes of muscarinic and nicotinic receptors and neuroprotective properties. To investigate muscarinic receptor subtypes in frontal cortices of AD brains, the muscarinic antagonists pirenzepine, AF-DX 116, HHSiD, p-F-HHSiD and himbacine were used in receptor binding assays. 2. 12. Pamoplantar Pustulosis. Pathogenetic Studies with Special Reference to the Role of Nicotine

    Författare :Eva Hagforsen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Medical sciences; Palmoplantar pustulosis; smoking; sweat gland apparatus; neuropeptides; non-neuronal cholinergic system; nicotinic receptor antibodies; autoimmune disease; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Dermatology and Venerology; dermatologi och venereologi;

    Sammanfattning : Palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP) is a chronic disease of unknown pathogenesis. Most of the patients were smokers. High prevalence of a number of autoimmune diseases was observed among the patients (thyroid disease 14%, gluten intolerance 8%, diabetes type 1 3%). Eosinophils and neutrophils were found in large numbers in the pustules. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Advanced Fluorescence Microscopy to Study Plasma Membrane Protein Dynamics

    Författare :Joachim Piguet; Horst Vogel; Ruud Hovius; Jerker Widengren; Antoine Triller; Switzerland Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL); []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; fluorescence; microscopy; plasma membrane; membrane proteins; membrane proteins diffusion; single-molecule imaging; single-molecule tracking; pentameric ligand-gated ion channels; nicotinic acetylcholine receptor; serotonin receptor; synapse; neuromuscular junction; post-synaptic scaffold; rapsyn; myopathies; fluorescent proteins; Förster resonance energy transfer; FRET imaging; protein-protein interactions; protein trafficking; photo-activatable proteins; Biological Physics; Biologisk fysik;

    Sammanfattning : Membrane protein dynamics is of great importance for living organisms. The precise localization of proteins composing a synapse on the membrane facing a nerve terminus is essential for proper functioning of the nervous system. In muscle fibers, the nicotinic acetylcholine is densely packed under the motor nerve termini. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Distribution and function of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in glia cells and neurons with focus on the neuroprotective mechanisms of cholesterol lowering drugs in Alzheimer's disease

    Författare :Jin Xiu; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Nicotinic acetylcholine receptor; Alzheimer s disease; glia cells; Abeta; cholesterol; cholesterollowering drugs;

    Sammanfattning : Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are involved in the regulation of many processes including synapses regeneration, neurotransmission and neuroprotection in the central nervous system (CNS). There is increasing evidence for the disturbances in nAChRs in Alzheimer's disease (AD). LÄS MER

  5. 15. Neuronal nicotinic receptor subtypes in normal ageing, Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia : influences of neuropathological mechanisms as studied in human autopsy brain and transgenic mice

    Författare :Amelia Marutle; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Ageing; Alzheimer s disease; P-amyloid; Nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subtypes; Postmortem human brain; Schizophrenia; Transgenic mice;

    Sammanfattning : Neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are transmitter-gated ion channel receptors which are widely distributed in the brain. They mediate the effects of several neurotransmitters including ACh, DA, 5-HT and NA and are important for many normal physiological functions in the brain and are also implicated in a number of CNS disorders, such as AD, PD, schizophrenia, Tourette's syndrome and familial epilepsy.
