21. Raising Voices : Singing repertoire and practices in Swedish schools
Sammanfattning : This doctoral study aims to (i) investigate current song repertoire and singing practices in Swedish elementary school music education and (ii) to critically assess what factors may be seen to affect singing practices and repertoire choice. It looks to map out how much young students are singing in the general music classroom, what they sing, and how they sing, and to discuss possible implications for pedagogical practice from an ethnomusicological perspective. Sammanfattning : During my time as Director of Studies at the Municipal Music School of Lund, Sweden, I have had several discussions with teachers, students, parents, municipality civil servants, and politicians. I have concluded that in general, culture schools and music schools are looked upon as institutions where parents safely can send their children convinced about that they get a qualified education regarding the instrument of choice. Sammanfattning : In my profession as a music teacher in upper secondary school, I have often encountered students who express a dichotomy between their association of music in everyday life and music in school. I discuss the ontology of arts-based learning processes in relation to arts methods and how that relationship can be related to the learning processes that are made visible in the classroom work of a 5th grade class in a Swedish Primary school.
