1. Muscarinic receptors and urinary bladder selectivity : Properties that determine the organ selectivity of compounds
Sammanfattning : Urinary bladder contraction is mainly mediated by activation of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChR). Muscarinic antagonists are often effective in treatment of unstable bladder. The effectiveness of this treatment has often been limited by side effects as dry mouth. LÄS MER
2. Muscarinic acetylcholine receptors : investigation of interactions with agonists and antagonists
Sammanfattning : In the present investigation interactions of agonists and antagonists with the muscarinic acetylcholine receptor from rat cerebral cortex and rat ileum smooth muscle have been characterized. It is suggested that the binding of antagonist involves two sequential equilibria, an association reaction followed by isomerization of the receptor-antagonist complex. 3. Acetylcholine in Spinal Pain Modulation : An in vivo Study in the Rat
Sammanfattning : The spinal cord is an important component in the processing and modulation of painful stimuli. Nerve signals from the periphery are relayed and further conducted to the brain (nociception) in the spinal cord, and the most essential modulation of painful information (antinociception) occurs here. 4. Characterization of secretory mechanisms in lacrimal and salivary glands
Sammanfattning : Dry mouth and dry eyes are multifactorial morbidities that can lead to a severely reduced quality of life. Approximately 20% of the population suffers from ocular or oral dryness. LÄS MER
5. Islet constitutive nitric oxide synthase and nitric oxide production. Modulatory effects on insulin and glucagon secretion
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to elucidate the role of nitric oxide (NO) in the transduction signalling of insulin and glucagon release by stimulating or inhibiting islet endogenous NO-production as well as by using NO donors. Insulin release stimulated by L-arginine, the substrate for constitutive NO-synthase (cNOS)-catalyzed NO-production, was increased by the selective NOS-inhibitor NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) and suppressed by the intracellular NO donor hydroxylamine.
