  1. 6. The role of young-of-the-year fish in lake ecosystems

    Författare :Pia Romare; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Hydrobiology; Rutilus rutilus; Perca fluviatilis; diet-dependent growth; density dependent growth; behavioural cascade; 0 fish behaviour; horizontal echo sounding; biomanipulation; trophic cascade; predation pressure; young-of-the-year fish; trophic interactions; marine biology; aquatic ecology; limnology; Marinbiologi; limnologi; akvatisk ekologi; Ecology; Ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Food chain theory is based on consumption; that is, presupposing that the only important interaction between organisms is that they actually meet in an unstructured environment and that one of them is consumed. Recently, studies, including biomanipulation projects, have indicated that trophic interactions are more complex than predicted by food chain theory. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Linking movement ecology with the management of mobile species : managing moose in Sweden

    Författare :Andrew Allen; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : A central goal in conserving, or managing, biodiversity is to identify the spatial scale of management. Traditional approaches like protected areas aim to delineate boundaries, within which species are managed. These boundaries are set using, among others, species richness targets and political borders, but often fail to consider species movements. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Living in a predation matrix : Studies on fish and their prey in a Baltic Sea coastal area

    Författare :Ida Ahlbeck; Sture Hansson; Hannu Lehtonen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; diet analysis methods; Sander lucioperca; behaviour; rearing environment; diel vertical migration; Acartia spp.; Eurytemora affinis; Perca fluviatilis; stable isotopes; body condition; sedentarity; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis was written within the framework of a biomanipulation project where young-of-the-year (YOY) pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) were stocked to a Baltic Sea bay to improve water quality through a top-down trophic cascade. The aim of my doctorial studies was however focused on a broader ecological question, namely predation (the main driving force in a biomanipulation). LÄS MER

  4. 9. Colonization processes of soil fauna and mycorrhizal fungi

    Författare :Dagmar Gormsen; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Animal ecology; abandonment; land use; ectomycorrhiza; arbuscular mycorrhiza; lumbricid earthworms; Acari; soil fauna; collembola; Djurekologi; Microbiology; bacteriology; virology; mycology; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi;

    Sammanfattning : Colonization consists of two parts, a dispersal phase followed by establishment and reproduction at a new site. Dispersal behaviour influences survival and the access to resources and mates of individuals and is thus closely linked to an organism's fitness. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Forest Development and Interactions with Large Herbivores

    Författare :Christer Kalén; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Växtekologi; Plant ecology; modelling; preferences; browsing; deer; forestry; succession;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis discusses aspects of feeding habits of moose (Alces alces) and their impact on forest development. The development of forage that is available to moose was studied by sampling the amount of edible biomass on pine and birch trees. LÄS MER
