  1. 1. Lichens in Mountain Rainforests of Tanzania : Studies of Usnea and Calicioids

    Författare :Stella Gilbert Temu; Sanja Tibell Savić; Leif Tibell; Philippe Clerc; Göran Thor; Donatha Tibuhwa; Einar Timdal; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; Lichens; Usnea; calicioids; molecular phylogeny; secondary chemistry; morphotypes; Biology with specialization in Systematics; Biologi med inriktning mot systematik;

    Sammanfattning : Lichens occur in various habitats. They often have narrow niches and are sensitive to environmental changes leading to their use as bioindicators of environmental disturbances and conditions; air and heavy metal pollution, agricultural toxins, assessing forest continuity and drought tolerance. 2. 2. Genetic variability and nitrogenase activity of cyanobacterial communities associated with tropical seagrass meadows (western Indian Ocean)

    Författare :Mariam Hamisi; Birgitta Bergman; Thomas Lyimo; Beatriz Díez; Lucas Stal; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cyanobacteria; nitrogenase activity; diazotrophs; seagrass; western Indian ocean; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology; växtfysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Tropical seagrass ecosystems are highly productive and important for sustaining marine life and associated coastal societies. In this study, the diversity and role of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria associated with five common seagrass genera in coastal regions of the western Indian Ocean (WIO; Tanzania) were examined, as well as the impact of anthropogenic activities. 3. 3. Modulation of neutrophil extracellular trap formation in health and disease

    Författare :Ava Hosseinzadeh; Constantin F. Urban; Carol Munro; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neutrophils; Candida albicans; Adenosine; Tempol; Nicotine; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Sammanfattning : The critical prompt innate immune response is highly built upon the influx of neutrophils from the blood stream to the site of infection. In the battlefield, neutrophils sense pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) through their pattern-recognition receptors (PRRs) to launch a number of responses with the goal to defeat the invading pathogen. 4. 4. Parasite on Crayfish : Characterisation of Their Pathogenesis, Host Interactions and Diversity

    Författare :Eakaphun Bangyeekhun; Anders Tunlid; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Zoophysiology; Crayfish; Parasite; Oomycete; Prophenoloxidase; Peroxinectin; Aphanomyces astaci; Psorospermium haecheli; White spot syndrome virus; Zoofysiologi; Animal physiology; Zoofysiologi; biologisk beroendeforskning; Biological Research on Drug Dependence;

    Sammanfattning : The crayfish plague refractory crayfish, Pacifastacus leniusculus, which can harbour the fungal parasite within melanotic sheath, are found to constitutively express the gene encoding for prophenoloxidase (proPO) after mimicking parasite attack. In contrast, the susceptible crayfish, Astacus astacus, responds to the parasite by increased levels of proPO transcript, particularly in the semigranular haemocytes. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Causes and consequences of spatial genetic variation in two species of scleractinian coral in East Africa : Levels of genetic differentiation and intraspecific diversity of Pocillopora damicornis and Platygyra daedalea

    Författare :Petra Souter; Mats Grahn; Bertil Borg; Karen Miller; Södertörns högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; population genetics; corals; Kenya; Tanzania; Functional Zoomorphology; funktionell morfologi;

    Sammanfattning : The work presented in this thesis is a study of the spatial genetic structure of two species of scleractinian corals, Pocillopora damicornis and Platygyra daedalea. The overall objective was to investigate the current capacity of MPAs to preserve and restore coral reefs and to contribute information to improve management decisions. LÄS MER
