1. Platelet monoamine oxidase : From genetic regulation to behavior
Sammanfattning : Genetic and environmental factors contribute to the development of personality and vulnerability forpsychiatric disorders. The activity of monoamine oxidase in platelets (trbc-MAO), which is mainlygenetically determined, correlates to personality traits such as sensation-seeking and impulsiveness, andlow trbc-MAO activity is more common in patients with type 2 alcoholism. 2. Genetic studies of two inherited human phenotypes : Hearing loss and monoamine oxidase activity
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on the identification of genetic factors underlying two inherited human phenotypes: hearing loss and monoamine oxidase activity. Non-syndromic hearing loss segregating in a Swedish family was tested for linkage to 13 previously reported candidate loci for hearing disabilities. LÄS MER
3. Isotopes as Mechanism Spies : Nucleophilic Bimolecular Substitution and Monoamine Oxidase B Catalysed Amine Oxidation Probed with Heavy Atom Kinetic Isotope Effects
Sammanfattning : This thesis concerns the study of reaction mechanisms by means of kinetic isotope effects (KIEs). Studies of the nucleophilic bimolecular substitution (SN2) reaction had the dual purpose of improving our fundamental understanding of molecular reactivity and assessing the ability of kinetic isotope effects to serve as mechanistic tools. 4. Development of novel fluorine-18 labeled PET radioligands for monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B)
Sammanfattning : Monoamine oxidases (MAO-A and MAO-B) are important enzymes regulating the levels of monoaminergic neurotransmitters. Selective and irreversible MAO-B inhibitors such as L-deprenyl and rasagiline are clinically used for the treatment of psychiatric and neurological disorders. LÄS MER
5. The Relation between Serotonergic Biomarkers and Behaviour : – studies on human primates, non-human primates and transgenic mice
Sammanfattning : Rationale: The serotonergic system is involved in the modulation of emotion and plays an important role for personality and vulnerability for psychiatric disorders. In the papers included in this thesis, we investigate three biological factors that have been studied in relation to psychiatric symptoms: Platelet monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) activity, and variations in the MAO-A and the serotonin transporter (5HTT) genes.
