1. Studies in Molecular Astrophysics and Astrobiology
Sammanfattning : The molecules of the interstellar medium (ISM) can be used as probes of the physical conditions in a range of different types of interstellar environment, for example star forming regions. The first chapters of this thesis describe the theory and the observational techniques used to study the rotational transition emission from, and the present knowledge of, these molecules. LÄS MER
2. Satellite and ground based observations of massive star forming regions
Sammanfattning : Results from submm/mm radio astronomical observations, using the astronomy/-aeronomy satellite Odin and the 20m telescope at the Onsala Space Observatory, are presented. Analysis of spectroscopic data of interstellar rotational emission lines from gaseous H2O residing in giant molecular clouds (GMCs), reveal important new clues about the chemistry and spatial distribution of water molecules in these regions, including estimates of the water abundance in molecular outflows associated with massive star formation. 3. Complex Molecules in Star-Forming Regions
Sammanfattning : Results from spectral-line observations of molecular gas in star-forming regions, performed with the Swedish-ESO Submillimetre Telescope (SEST), are presented. The purpose of this work has been to provide better estimates of the chemical composition as a function of the physical conditions in the sources. LÄS MER
4. Studies of late-type stars and massive star formation regions using masers
Sammanfattning : .... LÄS MER
5. Molecular observations of obscured galaxy nuclei
Sammanfattning : It is becoming evident that some (ultra)luminous infrared galaxies ((U)LIRGs) contain compact obscured nuclei (CONs) where luminosities in excess of 10^9 L☉ emerge from inside dusty regions smaller than 100 pc in diameter. Due to the obscured nature of these objects, their inner regions are hidden from examination using optical or infrared lines. LÄS MER
